Abstract
Fitting algorithms to meet input data characteristics and/or a changing computing environment is a tedious and error prone task. Programmers need to deal with code instrumentation details and implement the selection of which algorithm best suits a given data set. In this paper we describe a set of simple programming constructs for C that allows programmers to specify and generate applications that can select at run-time the best of several possible implementations based on measured run-time performance and/or algorithmic input values. We describe the application of this approach to a realistic linear solver for an engineering crash analysis code. The preliminary experimental results reveal that this approach provides an effective mechanism for creating sophisticated dynamic application behavior with minimal effort. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2005.

Abstract
We report on work in progress that aims to provide a run-time management kernel for applications running on FPGAs with embedded CPUs. We describe the global concept, the organization of the hardware environment for the reconfigurable modules and the reconfiguration strategy supported by the run-time management kernel. Practical issues concerning the implementation of the system on a Virtex-II Pro-based board are also addressed.

Abstract
Grouping and segmentation of images remains a challenging problem in computer vision. Recently, a number of authors have demonstrated a good performance on this task using spectral methods that are based on the eigensolution of a similarity matrix. In this paper, we implement a variation of the existing methods that combines aspects from several of the best-known eigenvector segmentation algorithms to produce a discrete optimal solution of the relaxed continuous eigensolution.

New Algorithms, Architectures and Applications for Reconfigurable Computing
Abstract
The eXtreme Processing Platform (XPP) is a coarse-grained dynamically reconfigurable architecture. Its advanced reconfiguration features make feasible the configure-execute paradigm, the natural paradigm of dynamically reconfigurable computing. This chapter presents a compiler aiming to program the XPP using a subset of the C language. The compiler, apart from mapping the computational structures onto the available resources on the device, splits the program in temporal sections when it needs more resources than the physically available. In addition, since the execution of the computational structures in a configuration needs at least two stages (e.g., configuring and computing), a scheme to split the program such that the reconfiguration overheads are minimized, taking advantage of the overlapping of the execution stages on different configurations is presented. © 2005 Springer.

Abstract
Mobility of ubiquitous systems offers the possibility of using the current context to infer information that might otherwise require user input. This can either make user interfaces more intuitive or cause subtle and confusing mode changes. We discuss the analysis of such systems that will allow the designer to predict potential pitfalls before the design is fielded. Whereas the current predominant approach to understanding mobile systems is to build and explore experimental prototypes, our exploration highlights the possibility that early models of an interactive system might be used to predict problems with embedding in context before costly mistakes have been made. Analysis based on model checking is used to contrast configuration and context issues in two interfaces to a process control system. © IFIP International Federation for Information Processing 2005.
