The Subprime Crisis and Its Influence on Public, Private and Financial Sectors in European Countries

Abstract
The subprime crisis was a global financial crisis that affected a large number of countries and, in particular, the European economies. In this paper we considered fourteen variables associated to the public, private and financial sectors, in order to analyze the main vulnerabilities, differences and similarities observed in twenty-seven European countries. The statistical analysis was performed with the STATIS methodology, with data collected in the period 2002-2011, including some years before and some after the historical crisis of 2007-2008. The study led us to conclude that European countries are different in which concerns to investment, savings, sustainability of public accounts and public investment.

Reservoir computing with solitons

Abstract
Reservoir computing is a promising framework that facilitates the approach to physical neuromorphic hardware by enabling a given nonlinear physical system to act as a computing platform. In this work, we exploit this paradigm to propose a versatile and robust soliton-based computing system using a discrete soliton chain as a reservoir. By taking advantage of its tunable governing dynamics, we show that sufficiently strong nonlinear dynamics allows our soliton-based solution to perform accurate regression and classification tasks of non-linear separable datasets. At a conceptual level, the results presented pave a way for the physical realization of novel hardware solutions and have the potential to inspire future research on soliton-based computing using various physical platforms, leveraging its ubiquity across multiple fields of science, from nonlinear optical media to quantum systems.

Abstract
This paper aims to define a problem to be studied and summarize previous research work done. Remote work or telework enterprise model has been a growing trend. The Covid-19 pandemic forced businesses to adopt a temporary remote-working mode. Now managers are investigating whether this dnew working-mode is, or not, a better approach than the traditional working mode known as the office model. The proposed framework will support the transformation process from a physical into a remote work model supported by applying digital tools and methods. Furthermore, the framework proposed in this work aims to help business decision makers to decide which organizational model they should adopt after Covid-19: full-remote; hybrid or partially remote; or physical, also known as going back to the office. A simple and pragmatic framework is proposed to help organizations: understand if it's possible to transform a business from a physical (at the office) to a full or partial remote model; define the main goals of this transformation; create a simple template to map the new digital enterprise architecture in terms of tools, data management, business processes and human resources (job functions and digital skills).

Systematic Comparison of Left Ventricular Geometry Between 3D-Echocardiography and Cardiac Magnetic Resonance Imaging

Abstract
Aims: Left ventricular (LV) volumes estimated using three-dimensional echocardiography (3D-echo) have been reported to be smaller than those measured using cardiac magnetic resonance (CMR) imaging, but the underlying causes are not well-understood. We investigated differences in regional LV anatomy derived from these modalities and related subsequent findings to image characteristics.

Methods and Results: Seventy participants (18 patients and 52 healthy participants) were imaged with 3D-echo and CMR (<1 h apart). Three-dimensional left ventricular models were constructed at end-diastole (ED) and end-systole (ES) from both modalities using previously validated software, enabling the fusion of CMR with 3D-echo by rigid registration. Regional differences were evaluated as mean surface distances for each of the 17 American Heart Association segments, and by comparing contours superimposed on images from each modality. In comparison to CMR-derived models, 3D-echo models underestimated LV end-diastolic volume (EDV) by -16 +/- 22, -1 +/- 25, and -18 +/- 24 ml across three independent analysis methods. Average surface distance errors were largest in the basal-anterolateral segment (11-15 mm) and smallest in the mid-inferoseptal segment (6 mm). Larger errors were associated with signal dropout in anterior regions and the appearance of trabeculae at the lateral wall.

Conclusions: Fusion of CMR and 3D-echo provides insight into the causes of volume underestimation by 3D-echo. Systematic signal dropout and differences in appearances of trabeculae lead to discrepancies in the delineation of LV geometry at anterior and lateral regions. A better understanding of error sources across modalities may improve correlation of clinical indices between 3D-echo and CMR.

Involving suppliers in collaborative new product development: comparing large and small firms

Abstract
The main purpose of this article is to investigate early supplier involvement (ESI) in collaborative new product development (CNPD). For that a comparative study between small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) and large firms was implemented according to the generated innovation. It is based on an exploratory approach, based on case studies involving four firms that involve their suppliers in CNPD. Results show that ESI in CNPD takes place when large firms seek to differentiate their products and SMEs aim to increase their efficiency. The paper further shows the radical innovation promotes ESI in CNPD, both regarding SMEs and large firms. This study contributes to the body knowledge regarding the influence of radical innovation in early supplier involvement in CNPD, by adding a comparative perspective between SMEs and large firms.

Mathematical models and heuristic algorithms for pallet building problems with practical constraints

Abstract
AbstractIn the pallet building problem, we aim at loading a given set of items into one or more pallets, by satisfying specific constraints and minimizing the number of pallets used. In this paper, we address a practical case of this problem that originates from a real-world robotized application, subject to some non-trivial operational constraints. In practice, items are grouped into families and must be packed into horizontal layers. To facilitate loading/unloading operations, items of the same type packed into the same layer should be contiguous and at least one of them should be visible from the outside. We present a formal mathematical description for layer and pallet creation subproblems and then we propose heuristic, metaheuristic, matheuristic algorithms to solve the overall problem. The performance of the algorithms is assessed through extensive computational tests on real-world instances.
