How are you Riding? Transportation Mode Identification from Raw GPS Data

Abstract
Analyzing the way individuals move is fundamental to understand the dynamics of humanity. Transportation mode plays a significant role in human behavior as it changes how individuals travel, how far, and how often they can move. The identification of transportation modes can be used in many applications and it is a key component of the internet of things (IoT) and the Smart Cities concept as it helps to organize traffic control and transport management. In this paper, we propose the use of ensemble methods to infer the transportation modes using raw GPS data. From latitude, longitude, and timestamp we perform feature engineering in order to obtain more discriminative fields for the classification. We test our features in several machine learning algorithms and among those with the best results we perform feature selection using the Boruta method in order to boost our accuracy results and decrease the amount of data, processing time, and noise in the model. We assess the validity of our approach on a real-world dataset with several different transportation modes and the results show the efficacy of our approach.

A Matching Algorithm to Assess Web Interfaces

Abstract
The work presented in this article is part of ongoing research on the automated assessment of simple web applications. The proposed algorithm compares two interfaces by mapping their elements, using properties to identify those with the same role in both interfaces. The algorithm proceeds in three stages: firstly, it selects the relevant elements from both interfaces; secondly, it refines elements' attributes, excluding some and computing new ones; finally, it matches elements based on attribute similitude. The article includes an experiment to validate the algorithm as an assessment tool. As part of this experiment, a set of experts classified multiple web interfaces. Statistical analysis found a significant correlation between classifications made by the algorithm and those made by experts. The article also discusses the exploitation of the algorithm's output to access both the layout and functionality of a web interface and produce feedback messages in an automated assessment environment, which is planned as future research.

Design and Experimental Evaluation of a Bluetooth 5.1 Antenna Array for Angle-of-Arrival Estimation

Abstract
One the of the applications in the realm of the Internet-of-Things (IoT) is real-time localization of assets in specific application environments where satellite based global positioning is unviable. Numerous approaches for localization relying on wireless sensor mesh systems have been evaluated, but the recent Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) 5.1 direction finding features based on Angle-of-Arrival (AoA) promise a low-cost solution for this application. In this paper, we present an implementation of a BLE 5.1 based circular antenna array, and perform two experimental evaluations over the quality of the retrieved data sampled from the array. Specifically, we retrieve samples of the phase value of the Constant Tone Extension which enables the direction finding functionalities through calculation of phase differences between antenna pairs. We evaluate the quality of the sampled phase data in an anechoic chamber, and in a real-world environment using a setup composed of four BLE beacons. © 2022 IEEE.

Towards a model for determining patent revenue odds: An empirical study of technology transfer offices

Abstract
Technology transfer offices (TTO) were created with the mission of executing innovation policy and its technology transfer to industry. Most studies regarding TTO focus on the context of developed countries, so there is a lack of research on the subject in emerging economies, such as Brazil. In addition, the issue of how diverse the skills of the team of a given TTO should be for their best revenue performance is still little addressed. In this sense, the present study aims to identify which characteristics of the TTO, related to their human resources, influence obtaining revenue from the patents that constitute their portfolios. To achieve this objective, 272 TTO in Brazil were analysed with the help of the Logistic Regression technique, based on Maximum Likelihood Estimation. A remarkable conclusion that emerges from our results is that the universities to increase their revenue must invest in full-time employees (e.g., rather than in scholarship students, as tends to be the norm) and foster the inventions' communications, as well as to attract and retain employees with skills directly related to knowledge fields such as Law, Engineering, and Communication (quite surprisingly, Management and Economics graduates are not included). The combination of these factors can increase the probabilities or odds of a given TTO obtaining revenue. Thus, our results contribute to TTO human resource practices, especially those in structuring stages, such as those in Brazil and Latin American countries.

On the impact of adjusting the minimum life on receipt (MLOR) criterion in food supply chains

Abstract
The Minimum Life on Receipt (MLOR) is a widely used rule that imposes the minimum remaining age a food product must be delivered by the producer to the retailer. In practice, this rule is set by retailers and it is fixed, around 2/3 of the age of products regardless their shelf life. In this work, we study single and two echelon make-to-stock production-inventory problems for fixed-lifetime perishables. Mixed-integer linear optimization models are developed considering the MLOR rule both as decision variable and fixed parameter. When the MLOR rule is a variable, it is considered either a sole decision of the producer or a collaborative decision between retailer and producer. The goal of this work is to compare the supply chain performance considering this innovative setting of optimal MLOR (as a variable) against the traditional setting of fixed MLOR rule. The computational results suggest that allowing flexible MLOR rules according to the shelf life of products and the operational requirements of the producer benefit both entities in the supply chain. In particular, reducing the MLOR requirement in up to 12% does not interfere substantially with the average freshness of products arriving to the retailer, but reduces extensively surplus/waste generation at the producer while keeping a small amount of waste at the retailer.
