A case study on the use of agent technology for the management of networked multimedia systems

Abstract
The evolution of Television towards de digital domain is opening new opportunities but also new challenges both to users and system managers. Audiovisual television archives will be an essential component of the whole digital television operators systems, as archived information needs to be available to a wide range of users. This paper presents the work developed at INESC Porto within the VIDION project and the experiments on merging television, computer and telecommunications concepts and technologies by the use of software agents and CORBA to assist in solving problems of information and system configuration and management in a TV archive. Aspects such as definition of the problem, architecture proposed and current state of the work will be the focus of the paper.

FC Portugal Team Description: RoboCup 2000 Simulation League Champion

Abstract
FC Portugal is the result of a cooperation project between the Universities of Aveiro and Porto in Portugal. The project started in February 2000 and only three months later, in Amsterdam, FC Portugal became the first European Champion of RoboCup scoring a total of 86 goals without conceding a single goal. Three months later, in Melbourne, FC Portugal became RoboCup Simulation League World Champion scoring 94 goals, again without conceding any goal. This paper briefly describes some of the most relevant research developments and innovations that lead to FC Portugal team success. © 2001 Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg.

Mobile Transaction Management in Mobisnap

Abstract
In this paper we describe a transaction management system designed to face the inherent characteristics of mobile environments. Mobile clients cache subsets of the database state and allow disconnected users to perform transactions independently. Transactions are specified as mobile transactional programs that are propagated and executed in the server, thus allowing the validation of transactions based on application-specific semantics. In the proposed model (as in others previously presented in literature) the final result of a transaction is only determined when the transaction is processed in the central server. Users may be notified of the results of their transactions using system support (even when they are no longer using the same application or even the same computer). Additionally, the system implements a reservation mechanism in order to guarantee the results of transactions performed in disconnected computers. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2000.

Silicon olfactory bulb oscillator

Abstract
This paper presents a low power MOS-VLSI implementation of an oscillator proposed by Freeman to model a very important component of the olfactory cortex. The model dynamics has time constants in the order of 1/220 (s). To accomplish the long time constants a new filtering technique recently proposed was utilized. All the blocks involving information processing were designed to operate below threshold (weak inversion).

Abstract
We propose a programming model for distributed concurrent systems with mobile objects in the context of a process calculus. Code mobility is induced by lexical scoping on names. Objects and messages migrate towards the site where their prefixes are lexically bound. Class definitions, on the other hand, are downloaded from the site where they are defined and are instantiated locally upon arrival. We provide several programming examples to demonstrate the expressiveness of the model. Finally, based on this model we describe an. architecture for a run-time system supporting concurrent, distributed computations and code mobility.

Distributed processing in power system state estimation

Abstract
The State Estimation is nowadays considered the fundamental element of modern electrical power networks control centers. In this paper we develop a theoretically robust and computationally efficient state estimator algorithm, to solve the WLS problem by using parallel processing, The computational aspects of the parallel processing, was analyzed and tested using the IEEE 14, 57 and 118 bus systems. Computational experiments are compared with standard WLS methods, in the integral and distributed version. An evaluation of the degree of natural decoupling in the state estimation problem is rise performed. The results indicate that a distributed processing for state estimation, is the better way to adopt the parallel computing in power systems energy.
