RoboCup 2001: Robot Soccer World Cup V
Abstract
FC Portugal is a cooperation project between the Universities of Aveiro and Porto in Portugal. FC Portugal 2001 is our second step towards the creation of a flexible RoboSoccer team, with tactical changing abilities, that may be coached at any level, before and during the games, by human or automatic coaches. Although having the best goal average in the competition (scoring 150 goals in 13 games), the team was not able to score against the good defenses of Tsinghuaeolus and Brainstomers and finished third in RoboCup 2001. © 2002 Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg.

Abstract
This paper describes SGO, a management information system for bidding in deregulated electricity markets, developed for the Spanish case. SGO has a client-server architecture and consists of a set of integrated cooperative and flexible software tools for assisting the users during the whole bidding process: resources identification, bids generation, market performance characterisation, bidding strategy analysis and optimisation, generation of markets results reports and automatic performance monitoring for suggesting on-line corrective actions. © 2001 IEEE.

Abstract
This document introduces COACH UNILANG, a standard language for coaching (Robo)Soccer teams. This language was developed with two main objectives: to coach FC Portugal 2001 team and as a proposal to be used in Fukuoka 2002 RoboCup coach competition. This language enables high-level and low-level coaching through coach instructions. High-level coaching includes changing tactics, formations used in each situation and changing player behavior. Low-level coaching includes defining formations, situations, player behavior and positioning with high detail. The language also enables the coach (functioning like an assistant coach) to send opponent modeling information and game statistical information to the players. © 2002 Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg.

Abstract
This paper studies periodic gaits of multi-legged robot locomotion systems based on dynamic models, The purpose is to determine the system performance during walking and the best set of locomotion variables that minimizes the optimization indices. For that objective the prescribed motion of the robot is completely characterized in terms of several locomotion variables such as gait, duty factor, body height, step length, stroke pitch, foot clearance, link lengths, body and legs mass and cycle time. In this perspective, we formulate four performance measures of the walking robot namely, the locomobility of the foot, the mean absolute power, the mean power dispersion and the mean power lost in the joint actuators per walking distance. A set of model-based experiments reveals the influence of the locomotion variables in the proposed indices.

Abstract
This paper reviews the problem of translating signals into symbols preserving maximally the information contained in the signal time structure. In this context, we motivate the use of nonconvergent dynamics for the signal to symbol translator. We then describe a biologically realistic model of the olfactory system proposed by Walter Freeman that has locally stable dynamics but is globally chaotic. We present results of simulations and measurements obtained from a fabricated analog VLSI chip.

Abstract
Fault-tolerant control systems can be built by replicating critical components. However, replication raises the issue of inconsistency. Multiple protocols for ensuring consistency have been described in the literature. PADRE (Protocol for Asymmetric Duplex Redundancy) is such a protocol, and an interesting case study of a complex and sensitive problem: the management of replicated traffic controllers in a railway system [5]. However, the low level at which the protocol lots been developed embodies system details, namely timeliness assumptions, that make it difficult to understand and may narrow its applicability. We argue that, when designing a protocol, it is preferable to consider first a general solution that does not include any timeliness assumptions; then, by taking into account additional hypothesis, one can easily design a time-based solution tailored to a specific environment. This paper illustrates the benefit of a top-down protocol design approach, and shows that PADRE can be seen as an instance of a standard Primary-backup replication protocol based on View Synchronous Communication (VSC).
