Automatic delimitation of lung fields on chest radiographs

Abstract
The purpose of the research herein presented is the automatic delimitation of lung fields in posterior-anterior digital chest radiographs. In a computer-aided diagnosis system the precise location of the lungs is important as it allows the reduction of the re-ion under analysis, decreasing the computation time and facilitating data compression. Furthermore, it allows the delimitation of the search area, easing the selective tuning of the abnormalities detection algorithms. The results produced by the automatic method were validated by comparison with manual contours traced by experienced radiologists. Two programs with friendly interfaces were developed for this purpose.

Abstract
The Watson distribution defined on the hypersphere is much used for modeling axial data. This distribution is rotationally symmetric about the modal axis. Then, in practice, before using the Watson distribution for modeling our data, it is better to test the hypothesis of rotational symmetry. For this purpose, we consider the test given by Prentice. In this paper, we determine the empirical power of this test, when data come from a Watson distribution vs. the alternative, where data come from a mixture of two Watson distributions.

Abstract
This paper reports the building of a system for predicting load curves at Low Voltage Substations supplying a set of consumers of different types (residential, industrial, etc.). The system is built by the aggregation of individual Fuzzy Inference Systems of the Takagi-Sugeno type. The paper describes how actual measurements formed a base of raw data and how test and training sets could be built from this base. Results produced by the prediction system and their comparison with actual load curves confirm the good performance of the model.

AVHRR data processing for near real time applications

Abstract
Polar orbiting satellites with low spatial resolution sensors, such as the AVHRR, provide repeated global coverage of the Earth. The data is directly transmitted to ground stations, and in some cases distributed immediately after the data acquisition. Near real time applications can be implemented if the adequate processing tools are available. This paper presents a near real time processing system, developed for NOAA/AVHRR data acquired from the Dundee satellite station. The system performs image calibration, geometric corrections and atmospheric corrections with minimum operator intervention. The geometric corrections consist of an orbital-based correction refined by the automatic identification of Ground Control Points (GCPs) by image matching. The atmospheric correction is based on simulations performed on the 6S radiative transfer code using a set of typical and expected values for the most significant parameters. An attempt to evaluate the error associated with the simplified atmospheric correction method was carried out. As an illustration, 3 AVHRR images from NOAA 16 were processed. The ranges of values encountered for the most relevant parameters were analysed. The range and average values for the reflectance channels 1 and 2 with and without the atmospheric correction are compared. These were used to produce standard Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) images and atmospheric corrected NDVI images.

An integrated load allocation/state estimation approach for distribution networks

Abstract
In this paper we present a complete methodology to perform state estimation studies in distribution networks. Due to the peculiarities of these networks the traditional state estimation concept was enlarged in different ways. It includes a load allocation study, as a way to cope with the reduced number of real time measurements in SCADA database. The algorithm estimates binary values of topology variables, due to incomplete or erroneous topology information in the control center and it is able to include data modeled by fuzzy numbers as a way to include fuzzy results of the load allocation procedure or fuzzy assessments from experts. Finally, the paper describes a methodology developed to tune the weights to be used in the state estimation based on a Takagi-Sugeno fuzzy inference system. The paper includes a case study based in the IEEE 24 bus system to highlight and illustrate its application in a variety of situations.
