Distributed Surveillance System

Abstract
The present paper describes a Distributed Surveillance System that has the ability to detect, track and snapshot subjects moving around in a certain space. The system is composed by several surveillance agents and a central surveillance agent which communicates with them and process data. The surveillance agents are composed by a camera and a computer with wireless communication. The central surveillance agent runs on a computer also with wireless communication. In order to support the communication between the two types of agents, was created a language called VigilLANG. This language allows a high-level communication interface between the several surveillance agents and the central surveillance agent. The proposed surveillance system performs robust image segmentation providing the user images with the relevant information; provides robust subject detection and identification; supports expansion; etc. The system is totally configurable through the definition of new surveillance policies and may be easily expanded through the addition of new surveillance agents. The system was validated by performing a vast set of experiments, achieving very good results in the detection and position estimation of the subjects under surveillance.

Fast scanning transmissive delay line for optical coherence tomography

Abstract
A novel Fourier domain fast scanning optical delay line is proposed in which the walk-off is eliminated by only two passes through a diffraction grating. Working in transmission, the novel delay line is ideal for balanced optical coherence tomography configurations with recirculation of the reference beam. We evaluate theoretically and experimentally its walk-off and dispersion compensation capabilities. (c) 2005 Optical Society of America

Strategic term rewriting and its application to a VDM-SL to SQL conversion

Abstract
We constructed a tool, called VooDooM, which converts datatypes in VDM-SL into SQL relational data models. The conversion involves transformation of algebraic types to maps and products, and pointer introduction. The conversion is specified as a theory of refinement by calculation. The implementation technology is strategic term rewriting in Haskell, as supported by the Strafunski bundle. Due to these choices of theory and technology, the road from theory to practise is straightforward.

Generating dynamic higher-order Markov models in web usage mining

Abstract
Markov models have been widely used for modelling users' web navigation behaviour. In previous work we have presented a dynamic clustering-based Markov model that accurately represents second-order transition probabilities given by a collection of navigation sessions. Herein, we propose a generalisation of the method that takes into account higher-order conditional probabilities. The method makes use of the state cloning concept together with a clustering technique to separate the navigation paths that reveal differences in the conditional probabilities. We report on experiments conducted with three real world data sets. The results show that some pages require a long history to understand the users choice of link, while others require only a short history. We also show that the number of additional states induced by the method can be controlled through a probability threshold parameter.

A neural network control strategy for improved energy capture on a variable-speed wind turbine

Abstract
Pitch control has so far been the dominating method for power control in modern variable speed wind turbines. This paper proposes an improved control technique for pitching the blades of a variable speed wind turbine, using Artificial Neural Networks (ANN). The control objective is decided according the two states of operation: below rated operation and above rated operation. In the below rated power state, the aim of control is to extract maximum energy from the wind. In the above rated power, the control design problem is to limit and smooth the output electrical power. A model has been constructed and evaluated with experimental data obtained from Vestas V-47 660 kW wind turbine.

Unmaximized inclusion necessary conditions for nonconvex constrained optimal control problems

Abstract
Necessary conditions of optimality in the form of Unmaximized Inclusions (UI) are derived for optimal control problems with state constraints. The conditions presented here generalize earlier optimality conditions to problems that may be nonconvex. The derivation of UI-type conditions in the absence of the convexity assumption is of particular importance when deriving necessary conditions for constrained problems. We illustrate this feature by establishing, as an application, optimality conditions for problems that in addition to state constraints incorporate mixed state-control constraints.
