Constrained Fuzzy Power Flow

Abstract
In this paper a tool for the evaluation of transmission system adequacy is presented. Although similar in the basic assumptions to the classic versions of the Fuzzy Power Flow (FPF), the approach has significant differences in the formulation. First, it is symmetrical (no influence of the slack bus in the results), so all the fuzzy power injections are in the same situation. Second, by including line constraints, only feasible deterministic power flows are accepted in the fuzzy variables calculations, leading to a more correct representation of the possible impact of uncertainty. Third, recalculation of the estimated node fuzzy injections leads to a clear picture of the repressed power flows and thus of the adequacy of the grid. On the other hand, the Constrained Fuzzy Power Flow (CFPF) separates completely the analysis of the network from the generation influence and costs, which is indispensable in a unbundled organization of the power system.

Low cost control and monitoring motion control ICs

Abstract
For a long time, controlling AC motors in an efficient way, was a task only in the reach of some very specific electronic design Engineers. Now, with the up rise of Integrated Platforms it is possible to implement, with almost no effort, the desired application, customizing almost everything at the reach of a simple and user friendly software interface. However, the simplicity in control and monitoring has a major settle back. As expected, such products, very desirable by the market, are only sold in conjunction with an evaluation platform. Sometimes this platform does not fit the consumer needs and buying the full package is not a satisfactory solution, especially if it is just to get the control and monitoring software. In this paper, it will be shown that low cost alternatives are possible. Using free tools and manufacturer's documentation, it is simple to implement Motor Control with the desired IC by means of a very intuitive and complete Graphical Unit Interface (GUI), built attending our special needs.

Distribution rules with numeric attributes of interest

Abstract
In this paper we introduce distribution rules, a kind of association rules with a distribution on the consequent. Distribution rules are related to quantitative association rules but can be seen as a more fundamental concept, useful for learning distributions. We formalize the main concepts and indicate applications to tasks such as frequent pattern discovery, sub group discovery and forecasting. An efficient algorithm for the generation of distribution rules is described. We also provide interest measures, visualization techniques and evaluation.

A model for the effective reuse of learning objects in repositories

Abstract
Learning objects repositories intend to endorse reutilization but this purpose has not been fully achieved yet. In this paper, we describe a project addresses the effective reuse of learning objects in repositories. The initial model presented and discussed introduces new requirements in the way contents are stored and searched and in the contextual definition of learning objects. Considering IMS LD templates, we propose examples of its use for learning objects. © 2006 IEEE.

Best multiple-view selection for the visualization of urban rescue simulations

Abstract
In this paper we address the problem of automatically computing a set of views over a simulated three dimensional environment. The viewing system aims at, for each moment, supplying the user with the most pertinent information in order to allow a good understanding of the evolving environment. Our approach relies on an innovative optimization architecture that enables intelligent optimization techniques based on simulated annealing and genetic algorithms. Reported experiments were performed in urban rescue scenarios from the RoboCup Rescue Domain. We outline the possible extension of the proposed architecture to other visualization problems and argue on how several problems within the fields of Visualization and Rendering can benefit from it.

Proton exchanged waveguides in LiNbO3: Characterization and design methodology - art. no. 612319

Abstract
The purpose of this work was to develop a design methodology for the fabrication of proton exchanged channel waveguides in LiNbO3 operating in the singlemode regime at several wavelengths, with specific characteristics required to optimize integrated devices. To achieve this, it is necessary to obtain the relations between the optical characteristics of the waveguides and their respective fabrication conditions, and to introduce models of the waveguide formation process. The relations between fabrication conditions and optical characteristics of planar waveguides realized by proton exchange in benzoic acid are documented extensively in the literature. However, reports on the characterization of waveguide fabrication processes, performed in a systematic way, could not be found, resulting in the need to combine information from several sources. Discrepancies among results from different researches are evident, resulting from different experimental methodologies and calibration of equipment. Therefore, aiming at extracting a consistent data set, optical characterization techniques of the refractive index profile were employed to study series of samples.
