Excesso de incentivos à inovação na presença de consumidores sofisticados: um modelo de progresso tecnológico endógeno com capital humano

Abstract
Neste artigo é desenvolvido um modelo de crescimento baseado no progresso tecnológico endógeno, em que o crescimento econômico é induzido por melhorias contínuas na qualidade de cada produto diferenciado. A inovação, "motor" do crescimento, tem como "combustível" essencial o capital humano. Partindo dos modelos de base de Grossman e Helpman (1991a, 1991b), mas considerando, diferentemente, um índice de consumo constituído por bens diferenciados e um bem homogêneo, o modelo proposto destaca a influência determinante da procura no crescimento econômico, aspecto negligenciado pela literatura do crescimento endógeno. Do esforço de modelização decorre que consumidores pouco sofisticados, com reduzida preferência por produtos diferenciados em termos de qualidade, geram, seguramente, incentivos insuficientes para a investigação, enquanto que consumidores mais sofisticados podem gerar excesso de incentivos. Assim, se a quota dos produtos diferenciados na procura estiver positivamente correlacionada com o nível de desenvolvimento do país, então países menos desenvolvidos tendem a apresentar taxas de inovação relativamente reduzidas, ao contrário de países mais desenvolvidos, em que essas taxas podem até ser (socialmente) demasiado elevadas.

Unit commitment and dispatch strategies for a wind park

Abstract
This paper presents an optimization strategy to be adopted at wind park control level. This approach transposes the classical formulations of a unit commitment and a generator dispatch problem to the turbines of a wind park, assuming that variable speed wind turbines are installed, and considering that wind speed forecasts are available. Wind speed forecasts, demands from grid operators or generation levels defined to comply with market strategies are the inputs of the problem. A small example is used to illustrate the proposed approach.

Evaluating protein motif significance measures: A case study on prosite patterns

Abstract
The existence of preserved subsequences in a set of related protein sequences suggests that they might play a structural and functional role in protein's mechanisms. Due to its exploratory approach, the mining process tends to deliver a large number of motifs. Therefore it is critical to release methods that identify relevant significant motifs. Many measures of interest and significance have been proposed. However, since motifs have a wide range or applications, how to choose the appropriate significance measures is application dependent. Some measures show consistent results being highly correlated, while others show disagreements. In this paper we review existent measures and study their behavior in order to assist the selection of the most appropriate set of measures. An experimental evaluation of the measures for high quality patterns from the Prosite database is presented.

Assessment of power quality characteristics of wind farms

Abstract
In this paper the main parameters to assess the power quality of grid embedded wind farms are presented. International standards to assess and quantify the power quality of grid connected wind turbines exist for some years now, and are here extrapolated to wind farms. aggregates when possible being the correspondent methodologies identified in the document. Recently, the grid code requirements posed a novel challenge to this technologic area, particularly since they were issued with national or local objectives and without particular normalized global concerns. The form how the international standards are evolving in order to cope both with the power systems industry local requirements, but also with the global wind turbine manufacturers principles is addressed in the paper.

Compiler-assisted performance tuning

Abstract
The enormous and growing complexity of today's high-end systems has increased the already significant challenge of maximizing performance on today's equally complex scientific applications. In this paper, we discuss the role of compiler technology in supporting application developers in a systematic approach to performance tuning of key application components. Based on scenarios taken from manual optimization of scientific codes, we describe how compiler support can enable the programmer to achieve the same or better performance in a much more productive way. We also present examples derived automatically from compiler optimization that show results comparable to hand-tuned performance. © 2007 IOP Publishing Ltd.

A putative gene located at the MHC class I region around the D6S105 marker contributes to the setting of CD8+T-lymphocyte numbers in humans

Abstract
Significant associations between human leucocyte antigen (HLA)-A and -B alleles and CD8+ T-lymphocyte numbers have been reported in the literature in both healthy populations and in HFE-haemochromatosis patients. In order to address whether HLA alleles themselves or alleles at linked genes are responsible for these associations, several genetic markers at the MHC class I region were typed on a population of 147 apparently healthy unrelated subjects phenotypically characterized for their CD8+ and CD4+ T-lymphocyte numbers. By using a machine learning approach, a set of rules was generated that predict the number of CD8+ T-lymphocyte numbers on the basis of the information of the D6S105 microsatellite alleles only. We demonstrate that the previously reported associations with HLA-A and -B alleles are due to the presence of common long (up to 4 megabases long) haplotypes that increased in frequency recently due to positive selection and that encompass a region where a putative gene contributing to the setting of CD8+ T lymphocytes is located, in the neighbourhood of microsatellite locus D6S105, in the 6p21.3 region.
