A step up with the HARVARD system: the HARVARD-g system

Abstract
The HARVARD system is a general purpose system adequate for Knowledge Discover in Databases (KDD) running in general purpose PCs and based on distributed computing over a connected network of PCs. In this paper we discuss the extension of HARVARD to interact with a Grid Computing setting. This extension, called HARVARD-g, enable the HARVARD system to schedule task to the Grid and therefore largely increase its available computational power.

Abstract
This work presents the development of a software for data acquisition and control (ASYS) on a clinical setup. Similar to the industrial Supervisory Control And Data Acquisition (SCADA) the software assembles a Target Controlled Infusion (TCI) monitoring and supervisory control data in real time from devices in a surgical room. The software is not a full controller since the TCI systems comprehend permanent interaction from the anesthesiologist Based on pharmacokinetic models, the effect-site and plasma concentrations can be related with the drug dose infused and vice versa. The software determines the infusion rates of the drug which are given as commands to the infusion pumps. This software provides the anesthesiologist with a trustworthy tool for managing a safe and balanced anesthesia. Since it also incorporates the acquisition and display of patients brain signals.

An immersive musical instrument prototype

Abstract
This article describes a prototype immersive musical instrument that expands the concepts of traditional musical elements and allows the integration of a spatial dimension using 3D music and sound objects into the musical environment by employing physical, visual, and sound immersion. From the prototype's evaluation results, the authors conclude that immersive musical instruments naturally give users a way to perform, compose, or improvise music (in real time) with a high degree of control. © 2007 IEEE.

A ZigBee sensor element for distributed monitoring of soil parameters in environmental monitoring

Abstract
This work describes the development and implementation of a grid of self-powered multi-functional probes (MFPz) for small-scale measurements of different soil properties, as being part of a wireless sensor network. The measurement principle is based on the heat-pulse method for soil moisture and water flux measurements and in a Wenner array for soil electrical conductivity. To promote the deployment of these sensing devices across large areas, such as irrigation fields, the ZigBee standard has been adopted as a multi-hop, ad-hoc network enabler. The core of the MTPz device is a wireless microcontroller (with a built-in ZigBee stack) that builds upon an IEEE 802.15.4 radio device. A 7.2Ah NiHM battery that is charged by a solar panel powers the MFPz device. Experimental results have proofed the reliability of the MFPz, regarding power consumption, connectivity and data agreement with known soil samples, as a cost-effective solution for environment monitoring.

Abstract
With the growing numbers of the elderly population, the society is face to face with a set of new problems, namely the lack of resources to assist their living in a noble mode. Nevertheless, with the use of new computational technologies and novel methodologies for problem solving, some solutions to these problems are emerging (e.g., remote sensing/assistance/supervision). Therefore, it is our goal to show that under such scenarios, it is possible to bring into play different interconnected virtual organizations, through which will be provided to the population, in general, and the elderly, in particular, a number of services (e.g., healthcare, entertainment, learning), without derealization or messing up with their routine. © 2007 by International Federation for Information Processing.
