DYNAMIC PLANET: MONITORING AND UNDERSTANDING A DYNAMIC PLANET WITH GEODETIC AND OCEANOGRAPHIC TOOLS
Abstract
A comparative study is carried out for sea level observations in the North Atlantic from tide gauges and satellite altimetry. Monthly tide gauge records from 12 stations in both sides of the North Atlantic from January 1993 to December 2003 and monthly time series of sea level anomalies derived from TOPEX measurements are considered. The degree of association between tide gauge and altimetry observations is analysed for different scales by computing the correlation between the sea level components resulting from a multiresolution analysis based on the maximal overlap discrete wavelet transform. A similar correlation analysis is carried out to assess the relationship between the sea level observations and climate variables: sea surface temperature, precipitation rate and wind speed. The results show that altimetry and tide gauge observations are strongly correlated, as expected, but also that the relation is scale dependent, with covariability driven by the seasonal signal for most stations. For all variables the obtained correlation patterns exhibit significant spatial variability reflecting the diversity of local conditions affecting coastal sea level.

Abstract
Program slicing is a well known family of techniques intended to identify and isolate code fragments which depend on, or are depended upon, specific program entities. This is particularly useful in the areas of reverse engineering, program understanding, testing and software maintenance. Most slicing methods, and corresponding tools, target either the imperative or the object oriented paradigms, where program slices are computed with respect to a variable or a program statement. Taking a complementary point of view, this paper focuses on the slicing of higher-order functional programs under a lazy evaluation strategy. A prototype of a Haskell slicer, built as proof-of-concept for these ideas, is also introduced.

Abstract
Many music works produced in the past still exist only as original manuscripts or as photocopies. Preserving them entails their digitalization and consequent accessibility in a digital format easy-to-manage. The manual process to carry out this task is very time consuming and error prone. Optical music recognition (OMR) is a form of structured document image analysis where music symbols are isolated and identified so that the music can be conveniently processed. While OMR systems perform well on printed scores, current methods for reading handwritten musical scores by computers remain far from ideal. One of the fundamental stages of this process is the staff line detection. In this paper a new method for the automatic detection of music stave lines based on a shortest path approach is presented. Lines with some curvature, discontinuities, and inclination are robustly detected. The proposed algorithm behaves favourably when compared experimentally with well-established algorithms.

Abstract
Time has been successfully used as a feature in web information retrieval tasks. In this context, estimating a document's inception date or last update date is a necessary task. Classic approaches have used HTTP header fields to estimate a document's last update time. The main problem with this approach is that it is applicable to a small part of web documents. In this work, we evaluate an alternative strategy based on a document's neighborhood. Using a random sample containing 10,000 URLs from the Yahoo! Directory, we study each document's links and media assets to determine its age. If we only consider isolated documents, we are able to date 52% of them. Including the document's neighborhood, we are able to estimate the date of more than 86% of the same sample. Also, we find that estimates differ significantly according to the type of neighbors used. The most reliable estimates are based on the document's media assets, while the worst estimates are based on incoming links. These results are experimentally evaluated with a real world application using different datasets. Copyright 2007 ACM.

Abstract
Wireless sensor networks are moving from academia to real world scenarios. This will involve, in the near future, the design and production of hardware platforms characterized by low-cost and small form factor. As a consequence, the amount of resources available on a single node, i.e. computing power, storage, and energy, will be even more constrained than today. This paper faces the problem of storing and executing an application that exceeds the memory resources available on a single node. The proposed solution is based on the idea of partitioning the application code into a number of opportunistically cooperating modules. Each node contributes to the execution of the original application by running a subset of the application tasks and providing service to the neighboring nodes. ©2007 IEEE.
