Abstract
In this work, numerical simulations are performed and the performance comparison of four types of dispersion compensating Raman/EDFA hybrid amplifiers configurations in terms of gain, noise figure and nonlinear effect induced penalty is presented. A numerical simulator is presented for the analysis and design optimization of Raman/EDFA hybrid amplifiers for multi-wavelength operation. This simulator combines a steady-state model of a discrete Raman Amplifier (RA) with a spectrally resolved model for the Erbiurn Doped Fiber Amplifier (EDFA). The numerical simulator allows us to calculate the overall gain, the noise figure (NF), the optical signal-to-noise ratio (OSNR) and the signal and ASE spectrum at the output of a Raman/EDFA hybrid amplifier. We concluded that performance tradeoffs should be considered when an optimum hybrid amplifier configuration for a given fiber optic transmission system is to be decided.

A process calculus approach to sensor network programming

Abstract
We present a process calculus that models the communication and computational aspects of sensor network applications. The calculus focuses on a basic set of primitives for programming sensor networks that support code deployment, communication and local processing, and provides a very expressive core-language. The calculus and its associated theory provide the tools to verify the robustness of sensor network applications and protocols. © 2007 IEEE.

Origin of coupling to antisymmetric cladding modes in arc-induced long-period fiber gratings - art. no. 66190X

Abstract
We study the origin of antisymmetric perturbation of the fiber in are-induced long-period gratings that couple the core mode into the antisymmetric cladding modes. We demonstrate that this perturbation is caused by a temperature gradient in the fiber, which is induced, in turn, by a temperature gradient in the arc discharge.
