Abstract
Automatic biometric identification based on fingerprints is still one of the most reliable identification method in criminal and forensic applications. A critical step in fingerprint analysis without human intervention is to automatically and reliably extract singular points from the input fingerprint images. These singular points (cores and deltas) not only represent the characteristics of local ridge patterns but also determine the topological structure (i.e., fingerprint type) and largely influence the orientation field. Poincaré Index-based methods are one of the most common for singular points detection. However, these methods usually result in many spurious detections. Therefore, we propose an enhanced version of the method presented by Zhou et al. [13] that introduced a feature called DORIC to improve the detection. Our principal contribution lies in the adoption of a smoothed orientation field and in the formulation of a new algorithm to analyze the DORIC feature. Experimental results show that the proposed algorithm is accurate and robust, giving better results than the best reported results so far, with improvements in the range of 5% to 7%. © 2009 IEEE.

Abstract
In this work, a Raman fibre Bragg-grating laser sensor for strain-temperature measurement is presented. The laser resonator is a linear cavity formed by the reflectivity of the Bragg gratings and the virtual distributed mirror formed from the cooperative Rayleigh scattering in a dispersion-compensating fibre created by the Raman effect. Using one pump laser it is possible to obtain a Raman fibre Bragg-grating laser sensor with a range of similar to 35 nm. The sensing system is demonstrated when the fibre Bragg gratings are remotely located at a 10 km distance.

Abstract
Gossip-based protocols have been gaining an increasing interest from the research community due to the high resilience to node churn and high scalability, thus making them suitable to modern large-scale dynamic systems. Unfortunately, these properties come at the cost of redundant message transmissions to ensure bimodal delivery to all interested peers. In systems with high message throughput, those additional messages could pose a significant burden on the excess of required bandwidth. Furthermore, the overlays upon which message dissemination takes place are oblivious to the underlying network, or rely on posterior optimizations that bias the overlay to mimic the network topology. This contributes even more to the required bandwidth as 'undesirable' paths are chosen with equal probability among desired ones. In a Cloud Computing scenario, nodes tend to be aggregated in sub-nets inside a data-center or in multiple data-centers, which are connected by costlier, long-distance links. The goal of this work is, therefore, to build an overlay that approximates the structure of the physical network, while ensuring the connectivity properties desirable to ensure reliable dissemination. By having each node judiciously choose which nodes are in its dissemination list at construction time, i.e. by giving preference to local nodes, we are able to significantly reduce the number of messages traversing the long-distance links. In a later stage, this overlay shall be presented as a service upon which data dissemination and management protocols could be run. Copyright 2009 ACM.

Abstract
Memory is one's mental ability to store, to retain, and recall information, representing past and future, our dreams and/or expectations. However, as the human been ages, the capacity of remembering decreases as well the ability to pile up new memories, therefore affecting our quality-of-living and lowering our self- esteem. This configures a social and human dilemma. With the present work we intend to address some of these problems, in terms of a Personal Memory Assistant (PMA), in order to help the user to remember things and occurrences, making it in a proactive mode. It will also cater for some form of relaxation on the part of the user.

Abstract
A fiber-optic sensor for torsion measurement, based on a two-linearly polarized (LP)-mode operation in ultrahigh birefringent photonic crystal fiber is described. The structure of the photonic crystal fiber presents two large asymmetric holes adjacent to the core fiber. When linearly polarized light is injected in x- and y-directions, respectively, two separate interferometers can be obtained. In one of these cases, as torsion is applied to the sensing head a beat between the two interferometers is formed due to the simultaneous excitation of the two polarization states. The detection technique to read the torsion sensor is based on the analysis of the fast Fourier transform, which proved to be an effective and simple solution. The sensor exhibited reduced sensitivity to temperature.
