Abstract
Visual impairment and blindness caused by infectious diseases has been greatly reduced, but increasing numbers of people are at risk of age-related visual impairment. Visual information is the basis for most navigational tasks, so visually impaired individuals are at disadvantage because appropriate information about the surrounding environment is not available. With the recent advances in inclusive technology it is possible to extend the support given to people with visual impairment during their mobility. In this context we propose a system, named SmartVision, whose global objective is to give blind users the ability to move around in unfamiliar environments, whether indoor or outdoor, through a user friendly interface. This paper is focused mainly in the development of the computer vision module of the SmartVision system.

ADVANCED ENGINEERING MATERIALS

Abstract
The deterioration of water quality by Cyanobacteria cause outbreaks and epidemics associated with harmful diseases in Humans and animals because of the toxins that they release. Microcystin-LR is one of the hepatotoxins most widely studied and the World Health Organization, recommend a maximum value of 1 mu g L(-1) in drinking water. Highly specific recognition molecules, such as molecular imprinted polymers are developed to quantify microcystins in waters for human use and shown to be of great potential in the analysis of these kinds of samples. The obtained results were auspicious, the detection limit found, 1.5 mu g L(-1), being of the same order of magnitude as the guideline limit recommended by the WHO. This technology is very promising because the sensors are stable and specific, and the technology is inexpensive and allows for rapid on-site monitoring.

THEORY AND PRACTICE OF LOGIC PROGRAMMING

Abstract
One of the main advantages of Logic Programming (LP) is that it provides an excellent framework for the parallel execution of programs. In this work we investigate novel techniques to efficiently exploit parallelism from real-world applications in low cost multi-core architectures. To achieve these goals, we revive and redesign the YapOr system to exploit or-parallelism based on a multi-threaded implementation. Our new approach takes full advantage of the state-of-the-art fast and optimized YAP Prolog engine and shares the underlying execution environment, scheduler and most of the data structures used to support YapOr's model. Initial experiments with our new approach consistently achieve almost linear speedups for most of the applications, proving itself as a good alternative for exploiting implicit parallelism in the currently available low cost multi-core architectures.

Who Rules the Ruler? On the Misconduct of Journal Editors

Journal of Academic Ethics

Abstract
There are very few (published) accounts of editorial misconduct, and those that do exist are almost exclusively focused on medicine-related areas. In the present article we detail a case of editorial misconduct in a rather underexplored domain, the social sciences. This case demonstrates that although legal systems provide different instruments of protection to avoid, compensate for, and punish misconduct on the part of journal editors, the social and economic power unbalance between authors and publishers suggests the importance of alternative solutions before or instead of bringing a lawsuit to court. It puts forward strong arguments in favour of the need for effective regulatory bodies so as to achieve and maintain a culture of research integrity by all involved in the process. © 2010 Springer Science+Business Media B.V.

Abstract
This paper describes a statistical approach developed for assessing the impacts resulting from EV presence in a given electricity network was developed. The algorithm, developed for this purpose, is based on a Monte Carlo method and can be seen as a planning tool that allows obtaining average values for several system indexes, like buses voltages, branches loading and energy losses. Additionally, it also allows identifying the most critical operation scenarios and the network components that are subjected to more demanding conditions and that might need to be upgraded. The example of a small grid from one of the Azores islands, Flores Island, was used for illustration purposes and two scenarios of EV integration were considered: 25% and 50% of the current light vehicles fleet replaced by EV. ©2010 IEEE.

Abstract
The lightning discharge is one of the two natural sources of electromagnetic interference. Electric and magnetic fields generated by lightning represent a serious hazard to various systems, particularly those containing sensitive electronics. As wind power generation undergoes rapid growth, lightning damages involving wind turbines have come to be regarded with more attention. This paper is concerned with lightning surge propagation in wind turbines. We present a case study, based on a wind turbine with an interconnecting transformer, for the analysis of lightning surges. Computer simulations obtained by using the EMTP-RV code are presented, and conclusions are duly drawn.
