Explorative Spatial Data Mining for Energy Technology Adoption and Policy Design Analysis

Abstract
Spatial data mining aims at the discovery of unknown, useful patterns from large spatial datasets. This article presents a thorough analysis of the Portuguese adopters of distributed energy resources using explorative spatial data mining techniques. These resources are currently passing the early adoption stage in the study area. Results show adopter clustering during the current stage. Furthermore, spatial adoption patterns are simulated over a 20-year horizon, analyzing technology concentration changes over time while comparing three different energy policy designs. Outcomes provide useful indication for both electrical network planning and energy policy design. © Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2019.

Visualization of Urban Mobility Data from Intelligent Transportation Systems

Abstract
Intelligent Transportation Systems are an important enabler for the smart cities paradigm. Currently, such systems generate massive amounts of granular data that can be analyzed to better understand people's dynamics. To address the multivariate nature of spatiotemporal urban mobility data, researchers and practitioners have developed an extensive body of research and interactive visualization tools. Data visualization provides multiple perspectives on data and supports the analytical tasks of domain experts. This article surveys related studies to analyze which topics of urban mobility were addressed and their related phenomena, and to identify the adopted visualization techniques and sensors data types. We highlight research opportunities based on our findings.

A review of assistive spatial orientation and navigation technologies for the visually impaired

Abstract
The overall objective of this work is to review the assistive technologies that have been proposed by researchers in recent years to address the limitations in user mobility posed by visual impairment. This work presents an umbrella review. Visually impaired people often want more than just information about their location and often need to relate their current location to the features existing in the surrounding environment. Extensive research has been dedicated into building assistive systems. Assistive systems for human navigation, in general, aim to allow their users to safely and efficiently navigate in unfamiliar environments by dynamically planning the path based on the user's location, respecting the constraints posed by their special needs. Modern mobile assistive technologies are becoming more discrete and include a wide range of mobile computerized devices, including ubiquitous technologies such as mobile phones. Technology can be used to determine the user's location, his relation to the surroundings (context), generate navigation instructions and deliver all this information to the blind user.

Learned Pre-processing for Automatic Diabetic Retinopathy Detection on Eye Fundus Images

Abstract
Diabetic Retinopathy is the leading cause of blindness in the working-age population of the world. The main aim of this paper is to improve the accuracy of Diabetic Retinopathy detection by implementing a shadow removal and color correction step as a preprocessing stage from eye fundus images. For this, we rely on recent findings indicating that application of image dehazing on the inverted intensity domain amounts to illumination compensation. Inspired by this work, we propose a Shadow Removal Layer that allows us to learn the preprocessing function for a particular task. We show that learning the pre-processing function improves the performance of the network on the Diabetic Retinopathy detection task.

Fall-Prevention Exergames Using Balance Board Systems

Abstract
The prevention of falls in older adults is an issue that can only be solved with regular exercises, sometimes with the supervision of therapists. This paper presents a game framework that uses devices such as the Wii Balance Board (WBB) to replicate fall-prevention programs, such as the Otago Exercise Programme. The objective is to increase the adherence of senior users to these exercises, while increasing their autonomy by enabling them to conduct unsupervised games. Two interactive games were developed and tested using the WBB and other available devices such as smartphones. The main contribution of this paper is the proposal of several metrics for exergames for the elderly and the combination of digital games with fall-prevention exercises and automatic balance measures based on Centre of Pressure (COP) tracking. © 2019, IFIP International Federation for Information Processing.

Testing and Deployment Patterns for the Internet-of-Things

Abstract
As with every software, Internet-of-Things (IoT) systems have their own life-cycle, from conception to construction, deployment, and operation. However, the testing requirements from these systems are slightly different due to their inherent coupling with hardware and human factors. Hence, the procedure of delivering new software versions in a continuous integration/delivery fashion must be adopted. Based on existent solutions (and inspired in other closely-related domains), we describe two common strategies that developers can use for testing IoT systems, (1) Testbed and (2) Simulation-based Testing, as well as one recurrent solution for its deployment (3) Middleman Update.
