Abstract
In this work, we review the most important achievements of INESC TEC related to the properties and applications of arc-induced long-period fiber gratings. The polarization dependence loss, the spectral behavior at temperatures ranging from cryogenic up to 1200 degrees C and under exposure to ultraviolet and gamma radiation is described. The dependence of gratings sensitivity on the fabrication parameters is discussed. Several applications in optical communications and sensing domains are referred.

Abstract
As technology and artificial intelligence conquer a place under the spotlight in the automotive world, driver drowsiness monitoring systems have sparked much interest as a way to increase safety and avoid sleepiness-related accidents. Such technologies, however, stumble upon the observation that each driver presents a distinct set of behavioral and physiological manifestations of drowsiness, thus rendering its objective assessment a non-trivial process. The AUTOMOTIVE project studied the application of signal processing and machine learning techniques for driver-specific drowsiness detection in smart vehicles, enabled by immersive driving simulators. More broadly, comprehensive research on biometrics using the electrocardiogram (ECG) and face enables the continuous learning of subject-specific models of drowsiness for more efficient monitoring. This paper aims to offer a holistic but comprehensive view of the research and development work conducted for the AUTOMOTIVE project across the various addressed topics and how it ultimately brings us closer to the target of improved driver drowsiness monitoring.

Abstract
Industrial Manipulators were becoming used more and more at industries since the third industrial revolution. Actually, with the fourth one, the paradigm is changing and the collaborative robots are being accepted for the community. It means that smaller manipulators with more functionalities have been used and installed. New approaches have appeared to teach students according to the new robot’s capabilities. The DOBOT robot is an example of that since it captivates the student’s attention with an uncomplicated programming front-end, tools, grippers and extremely useful for teaching STEM. This paper proposes a dynamic based simulation environment that can be used to teach, test and validate solutions to the DOBOT robot. By this way, the student can try and validate, at their homework without the real robot, the developed solutions and further test them at the laboratory with the real robot. Currently, remote testing and validation without the use of a real robot is an advantage. The comparison of the provided simulation environment and the real robot is presented in the approach. © The Editor(s) (if applicable) and The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2021.

Abstract
Hospitality is one of the most important sectors in the tourist activity in Portugal. Knowing the characteristics and features of the hotel units operating in Portugal is important for all those who make decisions about investment in this sector. Knowing the reality of brand affiliation of Portuguese hotel establishments is also a matter of great interest for hoteliers in supporting strategic decision-making. Performing the analysis of the universe of hotel establishments in Portugal, their characterization is made concerning their features, facilities and equipment. In addition, the reality of brand affiliation of Portuguese hotel establishments is analyzed and discussed through a logistic regression model. The results allow us to conclude that just over a third of hotel establishments in Portugal are brand affiliated and they are mostly located in the more touristic regions. The results also show that brand affiliated hotel establishments have, on average, a greater number of stars, greater capacity and a greater number of facilities than non-brand affiliated hotel establishments.

Abstract
Confidentiality protects users' data from digital eavesdroppers when traveling through the Internet. Confidentiality is complex and costly, especially on applications that involve communication and data exchange between multiple users. Cryptography has been the most used medium to achieve confidentiality, being the greatest challenge the sharing of a secret key to a group of people in a safe and effective way. This paper presents a chat application that implements an innovative way of sending messages with end-to-end encryption, in real-time, with a dynamic key store, and without the existence of data persistence. The application stands out from the others by the fact that it innovates the way the keys are shared with multiple users.

Abstract
The Inven!RA architecture is an approach for online tracking of progression towards learning objectives, from analytics of distributed learning activities, provided by multiple third parties. However, there are few examples on how to implement such third-party learning activities, known as Activity Provider modules. We followed the Inven!RA architecture interfacing specification to create and implement two sample learning activities: a technical documentation analysis activity and an Arduino microelectronics programming activity. Integration tests with an Inven!RA architecture prototype confirmed the adequacy of this implementation.
