Automatic Extraction of Goal-Scoring Behaviors from Soccer Matches

Abstract
In a soccer match, a cooperative behavior emerges from the combined execution of simple actions by players. A cooperative behavior can be planned if players are previously committed to its execution prior to its start or unplanned otherwise. The ability to reproduce some of these behaviors can be useful to help a team achieve better performances. This work presents an approach to identify and extract cooperative behaviors that start from set-pieces and lead to a goal while ball possession is kept. The representation of these behaviors is abstracted using a set-play definition language to promote their reusability. A set of game log files generated with the FC Portugal team and collected from the RoboCup 2010 2D simulated soccer competition were analyzed. The results achieved showed that 25% of the total goals scored originated from set-pieces which attests to the importance of performing this analysis. Several guidelines for the definition of future set-plays were also inferred. In the future, these behaviors shall be tested to infer which are capable of neutralizing an opponent's team strategy and maximize the creation of goal opportunities.

Designing tablet-based games for seniors: the example of CogniPlay, a cognitive gaming platform

Abstract
This paper describes the analysis and design of a tablet-based gaming platform for seniors that promotes their quality-of-life and well-being by incorporating cognitive training mechanisms. A literature review of age-related changes and games for seniors indicated 'casual games' have the characteristics necessary to provide an enjoyable user experience for the senior audience. Having concluded that these games should target cognitive stimulation, the authors analysed mechanisms to achieve this purpose and compiled them into a matrix to be used as a starting point for the games design process. In parallel, the authors also gathered seniors' preferences and requirements regarding games, through observations and a game book. Low-, medium-, and high-fidelity prototypes for a gaming cognitive platform were developed, evaluated with end-users, and iteratively improved. Results showed that seniors easily interacted with the platform and were willing to use it in the future. Results and experience led to the identification of 10 rules of thumb that can be beneficial if applied to related projects. This paper concludes by identifying exciting areas for future research and development. © 2012 ACM.

Smart interface for reshaping photos in 3D

Abstract
In this work we present an interactive prototype for an interface that supports the interaction with virtual objects integrated in a real life scenario. The user can reshape or redesign a real space with virtual objects using several pictures of the desired space. The images are analyzed for known features such as surfaces, edges, floor location and room orientation. Using these elements, it is possible to devise an augmented reality system where the user can add virtual objects to the scenario. The smart interface attaches the objects to the scene elements (e.g., floor) automatically. The current demo loads images from user files or takes a snapshot directly from the camera. The high-level features are automatically detected, but can be manually adjusted. A use-case example of an augmented reality application is presented.

Initial Deployment of a Robotic Team - A Hierarchical Approach Under Communication Constraints Verified on Low-Cost Platforms

Abstract
In most real multi-robot applications, e. g., search-and-rescue, cooperative robots have to fulfill their tasks while driving and communicating among themselves without the aid of a network infrastructure. However, initially deploying autonomously a wireless sensor robot network in a real environment has not taken the proper attention. This paper presents an autonomous and realistic initial deployment strategy, based on a hierarchical approach, in which exploring agents, denoted as scouts, are autonomously deployed through explicit cooperation with supporting agents, denoted as rangers. To evaluate the initial deployment strategy proposed, experimental results with a team of heterogeneous robots are conducted using modified low-cost platforms previously developed by the authors. Preliminary results show the effectiveness of the method and pave the way for a whole series of possible new approaches.

Abstract
The metabolic disorder which entails the absent or reduced control of blood glucose in the body by means of insulin dependence (Type1) or intolerance (Type 2) affects more than 366 million people in 2011. This represents an increase of 28% new cases in one year. Diabetes Mellitus has become the most common chronic diseases in nearly all countries, and continues to increase in numbers and significance, as economic development and urbanization lead to changing lifestyles characterized by reduced physical activity, and increased obesity. Ambient Assisted Living (AAL), is based on a set of technologies which aims to provide an enhanced support to people's daily life, namely the offer of new solutions for healthcare to improve the quality of life of the population and reduce costs associated with healthcare. This paper presents a Bluetooth prototype low power battery-less wireless sensor communication system capable transmitting the information to a mobile phone or wrist wireless phone. The purpose of the system is to gather routine information from the glucose monitoring system proposed by Leal, et al and interact with systems like Ambient Assisted Living from Martins, et al. Programming from Galois connections

Abstract
Problem statements often resort to superlatives such as in e.g. " ... the smallest such number", " ... the best approximation", " ... the longest such list" which lead to specifications made of two parts: one defining a broad class of solutions (the easy part) and the other requesting one particular such solution, optimal in some sense (the hard part). This article introduces a binary relational combinator which mirrors this linguistic structure and exploits its potential for calculating programs by optimization. This applies in particular to specifications written in the form of Galois connections, in which one of the adjoints delivers the optimal solution. The framework encompasses re-factoring of results previously developed by Bird and de Moor for greedy and dynamic programming, in a way which makes them less technically involved and therefore easier to understand and play with.
