PATTERN RECOGNITION AND IMAGE ANALYSIS, IBPRIA 2013
Abstract
In the development of new regenerative medicine therapies for the treatment of central nervous system and spinal cord injuries, the identification of factors that inhibit or promote cell outgrowth in neurite outgrowth assays is fundamental, and the neurotrophic activity is commonly assessed based on the neurite/cell outgrowth. Neurites are projections from the cell body or the initial neurosphere and typically present low-contrast to background in phase contrast images. The extent of neurites is usually measured in a manual way and fluorescence images are the most used, generally requiring imunofluorescent staining. We present a novel automatic approach for the quantification of cell outgrowth from neurospheres, based on phase contrast and fluorescence images acquired from samples merely processed for DNA staining. Our approach detects the neurite/cell outgrowth, and its measures are in high agreement with the ones obtained manually. Furthermore, the image analysis time was reduced in more than 95% allowing the increase of the amount of data to be analyzed.

FIFTH EUROPEAN WORKSHOP ON OPTICAL FIBRE SENSORS
Abstract
A fiber optic sensor based on a long-period grating (LPG) inscribed in a photonic crystal fiber is investigated for vibration sensing for structural monitoring applications. In this paper, preliminary results are shown demonstrating the sensor ability to detect vibration induced in a test structure. The sensor frequency response when attached to a loudspeaker-acrylic plate stimulation system (tested in the range from 40 Hz to 2.5 kHz) is analyzed using an intensity based scheme with a tunable laser. An alternative interrogation scheme, where the vibration signal is retrieved from a spectral scan, is also demonstrated and analyzed showing promising characteristics for structural health monitoring.

JOURNAL OF BUSINESS ETHICS
Abstract
The research team measured the enterprise web accessibility levels of the Forbes 250 largest enterprises using the fully automatic accessibility evaluation tool Sortsite, and presented the compliance of the evaluated websites to WCAG 1.0, WCAG 2.0 and Section 508 accessibility levels. Given the recent attention to organizational leaders having ethical duties towards their dedicated employees, we propose that 'societal citizenship behaviour' concerns ethical duties of organizational leaders towards society in general and in particular to those who have less means to assert their needs. In effect, we found enterprise website accessibility levels to be in need of significant improvement. An interpretation of a positive path forward to better enterprise website accessibility levels is put forth based on a focus-group interaction and using BNML-a novel Business Narrative Modelling Language.

ROBOTICS IN SMART MANUFACTURING
Abstract
Industrial laser cutting machines use a type of support base that sometimes causes the cut metal parts to tilt or fall, which hinders the robot from picking the parts after cutting. The objective of this work is to calculate the 3D orientation of these metal parts with relation to the main metal sheet to successfully perform the subsequent robotic pick-and-place operation. For the perception part the system relies on the low cost 3D sensing Microsoft Kinect, which is responsible for mapping the environment. The previously known part positions are mapped in the new environment and then a plane fitting algorithm is applied to obtain its 3D orientation. The implemented algorithm is able to detect if the piece has fallen or not. If not, the algorithm calculates the orientation of each piece separately. This information is later used for the robot manipulator to perform the pick-and-place operation with the correct tool orientation. This makes it possible to automate a manufacturing process that is entirely human dependent nowadays.

Abstract
In this paper a new wearable locomotion data capture system for gait analysis is presented. The system under development intends to help clinicians to detect and identify mobility impairments as well as to evaluate the effectiveness of surgical or rehabilitation intervention. The proposed system allows the measurement of kinematic and biomechanical parameters in a practical and comfortable weft knitted legging, in which the sensors are incorporated.
