Abstract
A new hybrid between the particle swarm optimization (PSO) and Boids is presented to design PID controllers applied to the mean arterial pressure control problem. While both PSO and Boids have been extensively studied separately, their hybridization potential is far from fully explored. The PSOBoids algorithm is proposed to perform both system identification and PID controller design. The advantage over a standard particle swarm optimization algorithm is the promotion of the diversity of the search procedure. Preliminary simulation results are presented.

Abstract
The stacking problem is a hard combinatorial optimization problem with high practical interest in, for example, steel storage or container port operations. In this problem, a set of items is stored in a warehouse for a period of time, and a crane is used to place them in a limited number of stacks. Since the entrance and exit of items occurs in an arbitrary order, items may have to be relocated in order to reach and deliver other items below them. The objective of the problem is to find a feasible sequence of movements that delivers all items, while minimizing the total number of movements. We study the scalability of an exact approach to this problem, and propose two heuristic methods to solve it approximately. The two heuristic approaches are a multiple simulation algorithm using semi-greedy construction heuristics, and a stochastic best-first tree search algorithm. The two methods are compared in a set of challenging instances, revealing a superior performance of the tree search approach in most cases.

Abstract
In recent years there has been an increasing introduction of industrial robots in the manufacturing industry, with several studies that predict the increased dissemination of robots in industrial and service sectors. On the other hand, there is often the lack of people able to plan the introduction of these equipments in manufacturing environments and to operate it after its inception. This leads to the need to train undergraduates in the operation and programming of industrial robots. Due to the Portuguese economic situation, there is a lack of funding for the higher schools, leading to the need of finding innovative ways to teach these subjects. Bearing in mind these ideas, in this paper is described a course on industrial robotics, which is based in the achievement of the practical training using commercial off-theshelf robot simulation software for off-line programming.

Abstract
Driven by a real-world application in the capital-intensive glass container industry, this paper provides the design of a new hybrid evolutionary algorithm to tackle the short-term production planning and scheduling problem. The challenge consists of sizing and scheduling the lots in the most cost-effective manner on a set of parallel molding machines that are fed by a furnace that melts the glass. The solution procedure combines a multi-population hierarchically structured genetic algorithm (GA) with a simulated annealing (SA), and a tailor-made heuristic named cavity heuristic (CH). The SA is applied to intensify the search for solutions in the neighborhood of the best individuals found by the GA, while the CH determines quickly values for a relevant decision variable of the problem: the processing speed of each machine. The results indicate the superior performance of the proposed approach against a state-of-the-art commercial solver, and compared to a non-hybridized multi-population GA.

Abstract
Stress is a major factor for the degradation of cardiac health in first responder professionals such as firefighters. Monitoring stress during real events might be the key for controlling this problem. In this paper we inspect how standard heart rate variability (HRV) measures are associated with the self-perception of stress of firefighters in action, supported by an advanced technological solution to acquire this data. Results obtained from more than 94 hours of annotated ECG recordings of firefighters in action are promising, showing positive association with various standard HRV measures. Given the richness of the gathered data, we have also measured the association of the HRV measures with the stage of a firefighting event (pre, during, post), obtaining some interesting results that hint that the psychological impact of the post-event may be one of the most concerning situations for a firefighter, motivating further studies on this in the future.
