High-Gain Topologies for Transparent Electronics

Abstract
Transparent TFT technologies, with amorphous semiconductor oxides are lacking a complementary type transistor. This represents a real challenge, when the design of high-gain amplifiers are considered, without resorting to passive resistive elements. However, some solutions do exist to overcome the lack of a p-type transistor. This paper then presents a comparison analysis of two high-gain single-stage amplifier topologies using only n-type enhancement transistors. In these circuits, high gain is achieved using positive feedback for the load impedance. The comparison is carried out in terms of bandwidth, power consumption and complexity under identical bias conditions. Further, the same load impedance is used to develop a novel high-gain multiplier. All the circuits are simulated using a 0.35 mu m CMOS technology, as it is easy to test the reliability of the methods, since CMOS transistors have trustworthy models.

Seqins - A Sequencing Tool for Educational Resources

Abstract
The teaching-learning process is increasingly focused on the combination of the paradigms "learning by viewing" and "learning by doing." In this context, educational resources, either expository or evaluative, play a pivotal role. Both types of resources are interdependent and their sequencing would create a richer educational experience to the end user. However, there is a lack of tools that support sequencing essentially due to the fact that existing specifications are complex. The Seqins is a sequencing tool of digital resources that has a fairly simple sequencing model. The tool communicates through the IMS LTI specification with a plethora of e-learning systems such as learning management systems, repositories, authoring and evaluation systems. In order to validate Seqins we integrate it in an e-learning Ensemble framework instance for the computer programming learning. © Ricardo Queirós, José Paulo Leal and José Campos.

Molinate biodegradation in soils: natural attenuation versus bioaugmentation

Abstract
The aims of the present study were to assess the potential of natural attenuation or bioaugmentation to reduce soil molinate contamination in paddy field soils and the impact of these bioremediation strategies on the composition of soil indigenous microbiota. A molinate mineralizing culture (mixed culture DC) was used as inoculum in the bioaugmentation assays. Significantly higher removal of molinate was observed in bioaugmentation than in natural attenuation microcosms (63 and 39 %, respectively) after 42 days of incubation at 22 A degrees C. In the bioaugmentation assays, the impact of Gulosibacter molinativorax ON4(T) on molinate depletion was observed since the gene encoding the enzyme responsible for the initial molinate breakdown (harboured by that actinobacterium) was only detected in inoculated microcosms. Nevertheless, the exogenous mixed culture DC did not overgrow as the heterotrophic counts of the bioaugmentation microcosms were not significantly different from those of natural attenuation and controls. Moreover, the actinobacterial clone libraries generated from the bioaugmentation microcosms did not include any 16S rRNA gene sequences with significant similarity to that of G. molinativorax ON4(T). The multivariate analysis of the 16S rRNA DGGE patterns of the soil microcosm suggested that the activity of mixed culture DC did not affect the soil bacterial community structure since the DGGE patterns of the bioaugmentation microcosms clustered with those of natural attenuation and controls. Although both bioremediation approaches removed molinate without indigenous microbiota perturbation, the results suggested that bioaugmentation with mixed culture DC was more effective to treat soils contaminated with molinate.

Hourly energy and reserve joint dispatch with a hydro-thermal technological based representation

Abstract
Intermittent technologies are enhancing both the economic and technological value of ancillary services in the electric power system. Some of these services commonly denoted as reserves have been liberalized and are offered in the balancing markets in the European Union countries, or in the regulation markets in the USA. This paper presents a deterministic single-node centralized energy and secondary reserve dispatch that outputs hourly scheduled energies and reserves, and both commodities prices. In this model, units of each generation company are simplified into technologies and sub-technologies for faster performance, but still considering inter temporal constraints such as ramps and responding time for reserves, and unit commitment decisions such as start-up and shut-down costs. Detailed short-term hydro-thermal constraints (topology, efficiency, etc.) have been simplified by means of weekly constraints based on historical data (inflows, installed capacity, productions). The model has been validated by comparing its output prices and productions with the real ones occurred during 2010 in the Spanish market with satisfactory results. Furthermore, a study-case on high penetration of solar generation in the Spanish system reveals strong interactions between the energy and reserve markets and points out the importance of hydro technologies in the system. © 2013 IEEE.

Experience with a middleware infrastructure for service oriented financial applications

Abstract
Financial institutions, acting as financial intermediaries, need to handle numerous information sources and feed them to multiple processing, storage, and display services. This requires filtering and routing, but these feeds are usually provided in custom formats and protocols that are not the best fit for further processing. Moreover, the sheer volume of information and stringent timeliness and reliability requirements make this a substantial task. In this paper, i) we characterize one of these information feeds (the Exchange Data Publisher feed from the NYSE Euronext European Cash Markets) and ii) we present and evaluate a dissemination system for this particular feeder based on commodity hardware and open-source message-oriented middleware (Apache Qpid). This allows us to assess the feasibility of this approach and to point out the main challenges to be overcome. Copyright 2013 ACM.
