Innovative Teaching Strategies and New Learning Paradigms in Computer Programming

Abstract
Courses in computer programming combine a number of different concepts, from general problem-solving to mathematical precepts such as algorithms and computational intelligence. Due to the complex nature of computer science education, teaching the novice programmer can be a challenge. Innovative Teaching Strategies and New Learning Paradigms in Computer Programming brings together pedagogical and technological methods to address the recent challenges that have developed in computer programming courses. Focusing on educational tools, computer science concepts, and educational design, this book is an essential reference source for teachers, practitioners, and scholars interested in improving the success rate of students.

EXPERT REVIEW OF MEDICAL DEVICES

Abstract
This paper reviews instrumented hip joint replacements, instrumented femoral replacements and instrumented femoral fracture stabilizers. Examination of the evolution of such implants was carried out, including the detailed analysis of 16 architectures, designed by 8 research teams and implanted in 32 patients. Their power supply, measurement, communication, processing and actuation systems were reviewed, as were the tests carried out to evaluate their performance and safety. These instrumented implants were only designed to measure biomechanical and thermodynamic quantities in vivo, in order to use such data to conduct research projects and optimize rehabilitation processes. The most promising trend is to minimize aseptic loosening and/or infection following hip or femoral replacements or femoral stabilization procedures by using therapeutic actuators inside instrumented implants to apply controlled stimuli in the bone-implant interface.

Abstract
Fault Tolerance for Flexible Time-Triggered Ethernet-based systems (FT4FTT) is a project to devise an architecture for distributed embedded systems that provides both flexibility to changing real-time requirements and high reliability through fault tolerance. One of the key parts of such an architecture is the communication subsystem. When designing such a subsystem many decisions have to be made. To understand how such decisions impact the reliability of the final design, in this paper we present a framework to evaluate the reliability of a large number of potential designs. The approach is based on storing a finite subset of the design space for the communication subsystem of FT4FTT in an undirected graph and then generating a continuous-time Markov chain from the graph to evaluate the reliability of each design belonging to the subset.

BIOMEDICAL ENGINEERING SYSTEMS AND TECHNOLOGIES (BIOSTEC 2013)

Abstract
The assessment of the cardiovascular system condition based on multiple parameters allows a more precise and accurate diagnosis of the heart and arterial tree condition. For this reason, the interest in non-invasive devices has presently increased in importance. In this work, an optical probe was tested in order to validate this technology for measuring multiple parameters such as Pulse Wave Velocity (PWV) or Augmentation Index (AIx), amongst others. The PWV measured by the optical probe was previously compared with the values obtained with the gold-standard system. Another analysis was performed in 131 young subjects to establish carotid PWV reference values as well as other hemodynamic parameters and to find correlations between these and the population characteristics. The results allowed us to conclude that this new technique is a reliable method to determine these parameters. The range of the obtained values for local PWV are in agreement with the values obtained by other studies, and significant correlations with age and smoking status were found. The AIx varied between -6.15 % and 11.46 % and exhibit a negative correlation with heart rate, and dP/dt(max) shows a significant decrease with age.
