A GENETIC ALGORITHM FOR A MULTI-PRODUCT DISTRIBUTION PROBLEM

Abstract
This paper addresses a distribution problem involving a set of different products that need to be distributed among a set of geographically disperse retailers and transported from the single warehouse to the aforementioned retailers. The disfribution and transportation are made in order to satisfy retailers' demand while satisfying storage limits at both the warehouse and the retailers, transportation limits between the warehouse and the retailers, and other operational constraints. This problem is combinatorial in nature as it involves the assignment of a discrete finite set of objects, while satisfying a given set of conditions. Hence, we propose a genetic algorithm that is capable of finding good quality solutions. The genetic algorithm proposed is used to a real case study involving the disfribution of eight products among 108 retailers from a single warehouse. The results obtained improve on those of company's current practice by achieving a cost reduction of about 13%.

Mathematical modelling of multi-product ordering in three-echelon supply chain networks

Abstract
This paper proposes a mixed integer linear programming model for a multi-product ordering in a three-echelon supply chain network, where multiple manufacturers supply multiple warehouses with multiple products, which in turn distribute the products to the multiple retailers involved. The model considers practical production constraints such as production capacity, backorder allowances, and economically-viable minimum order quantities. Numerical computations show that the model can efficiently solve small-sized problem instances. © 2019, IEOM Society International.

Joining Global Aerospace Value Networks: Lessons for Industrial Development Policies

Abstract
Governmental investments on the development of high-tech clusters are among the main policies for socioeconomic development, enabling countries to be part of global value networks. Our objective is to identify which are the strategies of countries that want to join global aerospace value networks, by means of an abductive case research. Countries were divided in 3 groups (A; B: C) according to their global aerospace exports share. The analytical framework used to identify the strategies has 3 dimensions: network structure, network governance, and network dynamics. Results show different strategies according to the country's global exports share. While for countries in group A (exports above 1%), a strategy focused on the dimension network structure indicated a sustained high-tech sector. Countries in group C tend to focus on specialization, taking advantage of shifts in technological paradigms to upgrade their development level. The dimension network governance is mainly related to governmental efforts toward the creation of clusters and associations, promoting specialization and collaborative work. Finally, the dimension network dynamics describes the attraction of foreign companies to qualify the clusters at countries who belong to group C, while countries at group A reinforce their research and development activities. The comparison between countries is helpful for governmental representatives who want to develop strategies toward increasing participation in an industrial global value network and for supply chain managers to help selecting the locations for their operations.

Abstract
The industry faces more and more the challenge of deploying and taking advantage of evidence-based strategic decisions to enhance profit gain. In this research, the possibility of having a fully integrated system composed by a simulator and an IoT platform with the capability of collecting real-time data from the shop floor and returning performance indicators to support decision making is evaluated. The suggested approach involves a Manufacturing Executing System (MES) producing a production schedule, an IoT Platform composed by a message broker and a real-time database, a Simulator including simulation software and a wrapper, and a user application serving as an interface between the user and the IoT Platform and Simulator integrated system. A detailed analysis of the functionalities and integration of the Simulator and the IoT Platform will also be explored. To evaluate the approach, one use case of a production line in the automotive industry is used. The application of the integrated IoT Simulation system permits its validation and consequent future work. © 2019, IEOM Society International.

New product development-processes in the fashion industry: Evidence from Indonesian Islamic fashion companies

Abstract
Purpose: The purpose of this paper is, first, to examine the design requirements of Islamic fashion in the new product-development process; second, to explore the different practices of new product-development activities from successful and unsuccessful new product lines; and third, to investigate the sequence of the new product-development practice in the fashion industry, specifically the Islamic fashion industry in Indonesia. Design/methodology/approach: Questionnaires were distributed and semi-structured interviews were conducted to collect information regarding the practice of the new product-development activities. The Mann–Whitney U test was performed based on the quality of the new product-development activities of 100 Islamic fashion firms, including five innovative companies that had won several awards in Indonesia. An analysis of the extent to which fashion firms were engaging in new product-development activities provided a more detailed picture of the sequence of those activities. Findings: Islamic norms were adapted during the early design and promotional phases of new product development in Islamic fashion. Various choices of design and colour in Islamic fashion were also perceived as a way of preaching to women to dress more accordingly to the Islamic norm. The new product-development activities that were conducted differently for successful vs unsuccessful new product lines were idea conceptualisation, market analysis, technical and engineering analysis, financial analysis and commercialisation. The commercialisation phase was given the least priority of all the activities. Nevertheless, it contributed to the very first communication to the customers about new product lines. Originality/value: This study makes an important contribution to the deeper and more detailed research on how Islamic fashion companies perceive Islamic values during new product developments and how they perform new product-development activities between successful and unsuccessful products.
