Implementing RAMI4.0 in Production - A Multi-case Study

Abstract
The Industry 4.0 (i4.0) paradigm was conceived bearing smart machines enabling capabilities, mostly through real-time communication both between smart equipment on a shop floor and decision-aiding software at the business level. This interoperability is achieved mostly through a reference architecture specifically designed for i4.0, which is aimed at devising the information architecture with real-time capabilities. From such architectures, the Reference Architectural Model for Industrie 4.0 (RAMI 4.0) is considered the preferred approach for implementation purposes, especially within Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs). Nevertheless, the implementation of RAMI 4.0 is surrounded with great challenges when considering the current industrial landscape, which requires retrofitting of existing equipment and the various communication needs. Through three different case studies conducted within footwear and cork industries, this research proposes a RAMI 4.0 SME implementation methodology that considers the initial stages of equipment preparation to enable smart communications and capabilities. The result is a methodological route aimed for SMEs’ implementation of smart machines, based on RAMI 4.0, which considers both the technological aspects as well as the business requirements. © 2020, Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

Sustainability as a driver of operational excellence - The relevance of variability in process operations

Abstract
Sustainable development is a widely spread concept nowadays, especially due to external pressure related to environmental and social issues, affecting all players of the supply chain. Sustainable policies must be adopted, such as improving process performance and reducing waste. With sustainability as a driver of operational excellence, this study is focused on the improvement of the production process of a company by reducing variability. A variability analysis was done to understand its root causes and act upon them, as well as a quantification of waste in the process. Finally, an improvement plan was delineated to mitigate the problems identified. Copyright © 2020 Inderscience Enterprises Ltd.

Adoption of digital technologies during the COVID-19 pandemic: Lessons learned from collaborative Academia-Industry R&D case studies

Abstract
The need of lockdown, due to COVID-19, led many manufacturing companies to accelerate the adoption of digital technologies. Manufacturing companies were strongly affected by workforce shortages associated with the spread of COVID-19 and the lockdown, as well by connectivity losses among business partners. Therefore, these companies are reviewing their strategies to increase productivity, mainly embracing digital manufacturing technologies. Here the adoption of digital technologies aims to improve efficiency and flexibility in their processes, also improving connectivity among business partners. This study investigates how collaborative academia-industry R&D cases accelerated the adoption of digital technologies by manufacturing companies, given the current COVID-19 pandemic situation. Based on multiple case studies, this article reports the challenges and the strategies of three ongoing collaborative industry-academia R&D projects developed during the COVID pandemic situation. The results are presented in four different perspectives derived from industry 4.0 readiness maturity models: interpersonal communication, personal competencies and skills, systems integration, and technological strategy. It highlights the importance of manufacturing companies to have a well-designed digitalization strategy, need of continuous training and development of their workforce, and the support of Research & Technology Organizations (RTO) to bring more maturity to the efforts required during a turbulent situation. The results of this paper can provide relevant decision support for manufacturing companies, and its stakeholders, in face of challenges of the actual pandemic and post-pandemic scenario.
