Abstract
Genuine concerns regarding air pollution, climate change, and dependence on unstable and expensive supplies of fossil fuels have lead policy makers and researchers to search for alternatives to conventional petroleum-fueled combustion power plants with the purpose to reduce greenhouse gas emission. This leads to an urgent need to substitute them with alternate generating capacity or reduce the consumption during peak periods, or both. One of the options for power generation is the use of renewable energy resources, which can inject power to the grid deprived of greenhouse gas emissions. But, from the load point of view, the renewable energy resources capacity is not sufficient to supply all the required power. These points to the necessity of innovative methods, able to diminish energy consumption in different sectors, but also with the aim of reducing the domestic customer's total energy costs, greenhouse gas emissions and energy demand, especially during on-peak, while always considering the end user preferences. Hence, this paper analyses model predictive control (MPC) application in domestic appliances with the purpose of energy optimization. In this context, the research theme is focused on the relation between MPC weighting adjustment and the minimization of energy consumption. Three domestic loads are used for MPC tuning evaluation: water heater (WH), room temperature control by conditioner (AC) and refrigerator (RF).

TECHNOLOGICAL INNOVATION FOR CLOUD-BASED ENGINEERING SYSTEMS
Abstract
The distribution systems (DS) reconfiguration problem is formulated in this paper as a multi-objective mixed-integer linear programming (MILP) multi-period problem, enforcing that the obtained topology is radial in order to exploit several advantages those configurations offer. The effects of distributed generation (DG) and energy storage systems (ESS) are also investigated. To address the multi-objective problem, an improved implementation of the e-constraint method (AUGMECON-2) is used, providing an adequate representation of the Pareto set. The objective functions considered stand for the minimization of active power losses and the minimization of switching operations. The proposed methodology is tested using a real system based on the S. Miguel Island, Azores, Portugal. The potential uses of cloud-based engineering systems, both in terms of exploiting the enhanced decentralized computational opportunities they offer and of utilizing them in order to achieve communication and coordination between several entities that are engaged in DS, are thoroughly discussed.

RENEWABLE & SUSTAINABLE ENERGY REVIEWS
Abstract
Insular electricity grids are considered to have a more fragile structure than the mainland ones due to several factors such as the lower inertia because of lower number of generation facilities connected to the system, absence or insufficient interconnection with the main grid, etc. The recent trend of integrating large portions of environmentally sustainable power generation units that have a significantly volatile nature in the generation mix (such as wind and solar energy conversion systems) within this fragile structure, poses profound challenges that need deeper and specific analysis. This study aims to provide an overview of insular power system structures and operational requirements, especially under increasing penetration of renewable energy sources. Firstly, a general evaluation of insular power systems is presented. Then, potential challenges are thoroughly discussed together with opportunities to tackle them. Future technological developments, as well as innovative applications are also given special attention. Hence, this paper contributes to the scarce literature regarding insular power systems by providing a critical overview of issues regarding their operation and possible solutions.

Abstract
In this paper a bi-level approach is presented to model the behavior of multi-energy players (MEP) who are coupled based on signal price in a multi-energy system (MES). The MEPs are defined as energy players who can trade more than one energy carrier and have energy facilities (e.g. energy storages and converters) to convert and store various energy carriers. In this approach, MEPs trade various energy carriers in the upper level problem and the coupled energy price will be deduced. In the lower level problem MEPs schedule their energy balance based on the upper level signal price. By implementing dual theorem, the bi-level problem is transformed into a single level optimization problem that can be solved with CPLEX optimizer. The proposed model has been applied in an MES with four MEPs and the numerical results demonstrate the proficiency of the modeling framework.
