Abstract
The aim of computer-aided musical orchestration is to find a combination of musical instrument sounds that approximates a target sound. The difficulty arises from the complexity of timbre perception and the combinatorial explosion of all possible instrument mixtures. The estimation of perceptual similarities between sounds requires a model capable of capturing the multidimensional perception of timbre, among other perceptual qualities of sounds. In this work, we use an artificial immune system (AIS) called opt-aiNet to search for combinations of musical instrument sounds that minimize the distance to a target sound encoded in a fitness function. Opt-aiNet is capable of finding multiple solutions in parallel while preserving diversity, proposing alternative orchestrations for the same target sound that are different among themselves. We performed a listening test to evaluate the subjective similarity and diversity of the orchestrations. © Springer International Publishing Switzerland 2016.

Studies in Computational Intelligence

Abstract
The purpose of this project was the development of tools that facilitate the musical expression of a well-defined group of physically and mentally challenged people. Knowing those people and becoming familiar with their capabilities, tastes and ambitions was the departing point for the design of solutions. Once developed, they remained in their institutions, to become a part of their lives, contributing to the range of occupational activities they can be involved with. The composition of a piece of music that uses those resources and its performance by these people in the main concert hall of Casa da Música in April 2010 was more than a proof of concept, it was a truly engaging, motivating experience and, indeed, a proper artistic challenge. © 2014 Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg.

Abstract
The use of cutting-edge technologies such as wearable devices to control reactive audiovisual systems are rarely applied in more conventional stage performances, such as opera performances. This work reports a cross-disciplinary approach for the research and development of the WMT Sensor-Glove, a data-glove used in an opera performance to control audiovisual elements on stage through gestural movements. A system architecture of the interaction between the wireless wearable device and the different audiovisual systems is presented, taking advantage of the Open Sound Control (OSC) protocol. The developed wearable system was used as audiovisual controller in "As sete mulheres de Jeremias Epicentro", a portuguese opera by Quarteto Contratempus, which was premiered in September 2017.

Abstract
Tele-media-art is a web-based asynchronous e-learning platform, enabling blind students to have dance and theatre classes remotely, using low-cost motion tracking technology feasible for home use. Teachers and students submit dance recordings augmented with sound synthesis of their motions. Sound synthesis is generated by processing Kinect motion capture data, enabling blind students to compare the audio feedback of their motions with the audio generated by the teacher's motions. To study the feasibility of this approach, the authors present data on early testing of the prototype, performed with blindfolded users.
