A Semi-automatic Object Identification Technique Combining Computer Vision and Deep Learning for the Crosswalk Detection Problem

Abstract
Object detection in the traffic domain has faced growing relevance through the years in developing autonomous driving mechanisms. As with vehicles, pedestrians face a very dynamic context, and identifying relevant objects from a pedestrian perspective presents many challenges. Improving the detection of some objects, such as crosswalks, is very relevant in this regard. This paper presents a technique that applies a computer vision approach to automatically generate datasets for training YOLO-based deep learning algorithms. An initial precision of 0.82 achieved with the generated dataset, which is increased to 0.84 after manually removing incorrect annotations. Results show that our approach leverages the dataset building process by reducing the manual workload needed. The approach could be used for training other object detection models used in traffic scenarios. © 2020, Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

Towards Predicting Pedestrian Paths: Identifying Surroundings from Monocular Video

Abstract
Pedestrian behavior is an essential subject of study when developing or enhancing urban infrastructure. However, most behavior elicitation techniques are inherently bound to be biased by either the observer, the subject, or the environment. The SIMUSAFE project aims at collecting road users’ behavioral data in naturalistic and realistic scenarios to produce more accurate decision-making models. Using video captured from a monocular camera worn by a pedestrian, we employ machine learning and computer vision techniques to identify areas of interest surrounding a pedestrian. Namely, we use object detection and depth estimation to generate a map of obstacles that may influence the pedestrian’s actions. Our methods have shown to be successful in detecting free and occupied areas from monocular video. © 2020, Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

THE AUGMENTED REALITY AS A SALES PROMOTION TOOL

Abstract
This article addresses the use of augmented reality content as a part of the point of sale promotion strategy. The main research question is to determine whether the use of an application with augmented reality can facilitate the visualization and localization of the promotions available at the physical point of sale and, consequently, influence the shopping experience. To answer this question, an application was created with augmented reality content, so that it can measure the influence that this technology can have on the perception of promotions within stores. The general objective of the study is to identify whether the use of this application, in the context of supermarkets, could facilitate the visualization and localization of promotions in comparison with conventional disclosure approaches. Based on a literature review with authors from different areas, this article summarizes an ongoing investigation and at the end details the future steps of the research.

Combined Aerobic and Resistance Exercise in Walking Performance of Patients With Intermittent Claudication: Systematic Review

Abstract
Background: The short-term benefits of aerobic and resistance exercise in subjects affected by Peripheral Arterial Disease (PAD) are scarcely examined in interaction. This study aimed to identify the effects of combined aerobic and resistance exercise programs on walking performance compared with isolated aerobic exercise or with the usual care in patients with intermittent claudication. Methods: A systematic review was conducted following the PRISMA statement. A total of five electronic databases were searched (until October 2019) for randomized and non-randomized controlled trials. The focus comprised PAD patients with intermittent claudication who performed a combined aerobic and resistance exercise program that assessed the walking performance. Results: Seven studies include combined aerobic and resistance exercise vs. isolated aerobic or vs. usual care. The studies represented a sample size of 337 participants. The follow-up ranged from 4 to 12 weeks, 2 to 5 times-per-week. The risk of bias in the trials was a deemed moderate-to-high risk. After the interventions, the percent change in walking performance outcomes had a large variation. In the combined and isolated aerobic programs, the walking performance always improved, while in the usual care group oscillates between the deterioration and the improvement in all outcomes. Combined exercise and isolated aerobic exercise improved the claudication onset distance from 11 to 396%, and 30 to 422%, the absolute claudication distance from 81 to 197%, and 53 to 121%, and the maximal walking distance around 23 and 10%, respectively. Conclusions: Currently, there is insufficient evidence about the effects of combined aerobic and resistance exercise compared to isolated aerobic exercise or usual care on walking performance. However, despite the low quality of evidence, the combined aerobic and resistance exercise seems to be an effective strategy to improve walking performance in patients with intermittent claudication. These combined exercise modes or isolated aerobic exercise produce positive and significant results on walking performance. The usual care approach has a trend to deteriorate the walking performance. Thus, given the scarcity of data, new randomized controlled trial studies that include assessments of cardiovascular risk factors are urgently required to better determine the effect of this exercise combination.
