OPTICS AND LASERS IN ENGINEERING

Abstract
A multiplexer/demultiplexer for 100GHz channel spacing based on chirped fibre Bragg gratings with different bandwidths and optical circulators is presented. The spectral characteristics, specifications and operation of these passive devices are described, showing its potential use in dense wavelength division multiplexing (DWDM) applications.

FIBER AND INTEGRATED OPTICS

Abstract
The current status of the research and development as well as the recent contributions in optical communications at INESC Porto is reviewed. This review includes all the work carried out in the last few years in optical fiber communications, namely the development of passive and active optical devices. Some of the passive structures that have been studied and developed are: add-drop multiplexers, multiplexer/ demultiplexer based on Bragg grating technology, dispersion compensators, and optical cross-connects. Active photonic devices such as wavelength converters, fiber lasers, and fiber amplifiers have also been studied. New ideas are being continuously developed and tested.

Abstract
An intensity-referenced temperature-independent curvature-measurement technique that uses a smart composite that comprises two chirped fiber Bragg gratings is demonstrated. The two gratings are embedded on opposite sides of the composite laminate and act simultaneously as curvature sensors and as wavelength discriminators, enabling a temperature-independent intensity-based scheme to measure radius of curvature. Also, the system's performance is independent of arbitrary power losses that are induced in the lead fibers to the sensing head. It is demonstrated that the measurement range depends on the relative positions of the chirped fiber Bragg gratings and on their spectral bandwidths. By using two chirped fiber Bragg gratings with bandwidths W-1 = 2.8 nm and W-2 = 3.7 nm and with central wavelengths at lambda(01) = 1560.3 nm and lambda(02) - 1563.7 nm, we obtained a resolution of 1.6 mm/(1)Hz for the measurement of the radius of curvature (similar to R = 350 mm) over the measurement range 190 mm < R < infinity. Abstract
Long-period fiber gratings (LPGs) have been inscribed in nitrogen-doped fibers by electrical arc discharge. The influence of drawing tension as well as external load applied during arc discharge on coupling strength has been investigated. The influence of drawing tension on the grating's coupling strength is found to be negligible, whereas the coupling strength increases considerably with external load. Tomographic stress profiles of the fiber have been recorded before and after electric arc discharge. The axial stress modulation in the core region of the grating was found to be smaller than 10 MPa and is thus too small to be the dominating mechanism for grating formation.

Abstract
Long-period gratings were written in a pure-silica-core fiber using the electric arc technique. To assess the influence of stress relaxation on grating formation, tomographic stress measurements were performed inside the grating. No stress annealing could be observed within the accuracy of the stress measurement, suggesting a negligible photo-elastic contribution to the arc-induced perturbation of the index profile. In contrast, stress relaxation was found inside a splice of pure-silica-core fiber where discharge conditions are different, indicating the general potential to alter the fibers stress and thus the index profile using an electric arc.

Abstract
The sol-gel method was employed to obtain poly(oxyethylene) (POE)/siloxane hybrids (di-ureasils) doped with erbium triflate (Er(CF3SO3)(3)). The host hybrid matrix employed is composed of a siliceous framework to which short POE chains are covalently bonded through urea linkages (-NH(C(=O)NH-). Xerogels with infinity > n >= 5 (where n, salt composition, is the molar ratio of OCH2CH2 moieties per Er3+ ion) were analyzed. Samples with n >= 20 are amorphous. Those with n > 20 are thermally stable up to about 325 degrees C. In the di-ureasils proposed, the Er3+ ions are active at room temperature (RT). Concentration effects on the quenching of the 1.53 mm emission intensity (excited at 488 nm) are negligible.
