Power and Energy Webinar Series – “Interoperable hybrid distributed energy storage systems: The role of IEEE2030.5 and HESS dimensioning”

The 20th “Power and Energy Webinar Series” will be organized on Thursday, January 17, at 2 PM (GMT), under the motto “Interoperable hybrid distributed energy storage systems: The role of IEEE2030.5 and HESS dimensioning”.

Alexandre Lucas, Senior Researcher at INESC TEC Centre for Power and Energy Systems (CPES), and Peter Nemcek, Chief Technology Officer of CyberGrid, will be responsible for leading this webinar. Filipe Joel Soares, Senior Researcher at INESC TEC Centre for Power and Energy Systems (CPES), will be in charge of the moderation.

People interested in participating in the session, kindly register on the initiative's website: https://energywebinars.inesctec.pt/. Once you complete the form available under the "participate" section on the website, you will receive an email from the organization closer to the session date, containing your access credentials.

About the presentations:

Alexandre Lucas | Hybrid energy storage system sizing model using recurring pattern identification

Hybrid Energy Storage Systems have attracted attention in recent years, promising to outperform single batteries in some applications. This can be in decreasing total cost of ownership, extend combined lifetime, higher versatility in providing multiservice, and reducing the combined size. Nevertheless, the sizing of these systems, in such a way that proves to outperform a single battery, is a challenging task. This is particularly true, if such a tool is expected to be a practical one, applicable to different inputs and which can provide a range of optimal solutions as a support for decision makers. This article provides exactly that, presenting a technology-independent sizing model for Hybrid Energy Storage Systems. The model introduces a three-step algorithm: the first block employs a clustering of time series using Dynamic Time Warping (DTW) for recurring pattern identification. The second block optimizes a battery dispatch using Linear Programming (LP) to the identified recurring load profile. Lastly, the third block identifies an optimal hybridization area for battery size configuration, and offers practical insights for commercial technology selection, particularly focusing on the hybridization potential of different storage solutions. In the webinar the model will be applied to a real dataset from an office building to show the model working, providing viable and non-viable hybridization sizing examples.

Peter Nemcek | Distributed Energy Resources open-source interoperability toolkit

The overall vision of InterSTORE project is to deploy and demonstrate a set of Open-Source Interoperability Toolkit to integrate Distributed Energy Storage and other Distributed Energy Resources, to enable the hybridization, utilization and monetization of power flexibility. Seven high impact use cases will be demonstrated in four pilots. The goal of developing interoperability and seamless data sharing is very ambitious and lies at the technical and methodological advances: (a) protocol based on the IEEE 2030.5 standard (b) use of NATS connective technology that powers modern distributed systems (c) implementation of connected data spaces. To ensure the development and maintenance will continue after the end of the project an active community will be established.
