Assessing the Impact of Peer-to-Peer Markets on Distribution Grid Operation

Abstract
Due to the considerable increase of distributed energy resources, a new model of energy trading called peer-to-peer (P2P) has emerged in local energy communities that play a key role in the proliferation of renewable energy sources. However, although local and distributed power trading allows for a more decentralized and open grid, these models have a significant impact on the control, operation, and planning of the electricity distribution grid. Thus, reducing the demand for power at an affordable price is one of the main objectives of P2P markets, considering the different voltage limits and possible congestion existing in the distribution system. Thus, the main goal of this work is to evaluate the impact of the P2P market on the distribution network operation. This work includes an energy community in a neighborhood involving nine connected houses and one school, involving different renewable technologies and energy storage systems installed in each consumer and/or prosumer. The simulation results indicate that in the presence of local distributed generation and the inclusion of energy storage devices and electric vehicles allow a high-cost reduction (16%) and a very positive impact on the distribution system in terms of congestion and voltage deviations.

Modulation Methods for Direct and Indirect Matrix Converters: A Review

Abstract
Matrix converters (MCs) allow the implementation of single-stage AC/AC power conversion systems (PCS) with inherent bidirectional power flow capability. By avoiding the typical DC-link capacitor, MCs have the potential to achieve higher power density with a more reliable operation and less maintenance when compared with conventional two-stage AC/DC/AC PCS. For these reasons, matrix converters have been receiving significant attention from the academic sector but have not yet been implemented on a large industrial scale. This article reviews the Direct Matrix Converter (DMC) and the Indirect Matrix Converter (IMC) along with the respective actual and most important modulation methods. Simulation results are provided to validate the theoretical analysis and to get a deep insight about the implementation of space vector modulation (SVM) and respective switching pattern generator.

Social movements in a time of pandemic: The case of Tech4Covid19 in Portugal

Abstract
The COVID-19 pandemic had a strong impact on Portuguese society and raised the need for new technological projects to help frontline professionals in the fight against coronavirus and its effects on the local population and economic agents. It is in this context that the Tech4Covid19 movement was founded by Portuguese technological startups. This initiative brings together more than 5000 volunteers and offers technological solutions in the areas of health, education, and local economy. This study aims to understand and explore the organizational model and dynamics of Tech4Covid19 through the adoption of qualitative methods based on primary and secondary sources that have allowed the movement to be explored from multiple perspectives. The findings reveal that Tech4Covid internally promotes the development of its own projects, but also accepts projects proposed by external entities that are aligned with the principles and values of the movement. The organization of the movement is supported by autonomous self-managed teams regarding each project, and there is a coordination group responsible for the aggregate management of the various initiatives and for establishing communication with partners, the media, and social networks.

Optimal setting of PV and battery energy storage in radial distribution systems using multi-objective criteria with fuzzy logic decision-making

Abstract
Minimising the total power losses and enhancing the voltage profile is achieved using a proposed multi-objective chaotic salp swarm algorithm with fuzzy logic decision-making. The proposed multi-objective chaotic salp swarm algorithm is utilised to determine the optimal size and location of photovoltaic in radial distribution system to minimise the total power losses, total voltage deviation, and maximise the voltage stability index. In addition, the proposed multi-objective chaotic salp swarm algorithm is used to find suitable scheduling for battery energy storage charge/discharge during 24 h considering the intermittent nature of photovoltaic power generation. The proposed algorithm is tested on standard and practical radial distribution systems (IEEE 33-bus and 94-bus Portuguese systems). The performance of the proposed algorithm is validated by comparing its results with those obtained by other competitive optimisation techniques. The obtained results prove the ability of the proposed algorithm to achieve an efficient setting for photovoltaics and battery energy storages and determine their optimal allocations in order to minimise the power losses and enhance the voltage profile with satisfying all operating constraints.

A critical look at the Portuguese public-private partnerships in healthcare

Abstract
The pre-conceived idea that contracts in a public-private partnership (PPP) regime, in healthcare or in any other economic sector, are, as a rule, ruinous and appealing for only a share of the stakeholders, lacks a solid basis that confirms it. This idea, outset and nurtured by the media, has been instigating the distrust of the users who, in turn, demand a more rigorous and efficient utilisation of public resources. Being Portugal in the top of countries that resort to PPPs, it is urgent to inquire if its respective contracts originated an inefficient and ineffective management of resources. It is precisely this discussion that we address in this paper, focusing our efforts in the Portuguese healthcare sector.

MONITORIA: The start of a new era of ambulatory heart failure monitoring? Part II - Design

Abstract
Introduction: Heart failure (HF) represents a huge financial and economic burden worldwide. Some authors advocate that remote monitoring should be implemented to improve HF management, but given its increasing incidence, as well as its morbidity and mortality, a question still remains: are we monitoring it properly? There is no shortage of literature on home monitoring devices, however, most of them are designed to monitor an unsuitable array of variables and, to the best of our knowledge, there are no large randomized studies about their impact on morbidity/mortality of HF patients. Objective: Description of a novel monitoring device. Methods: As a solution, we designed MONITORIA (MOnitoring NonInvasively To Overcome mortality Rates of heart Insufficiency on Ambulatory). Results: This is a multimodal device that will provide real time monitoring of vital, electrophysiological, hemodynamic and chemical signs, transthoracic impedance, and physical activity levels. The device is meant to perform continuous analysis and transmission of all data. Significant alterations in a patient's variable will alert the attending physician and, in case of potentially life-threatening situations, the national emergency medical system. The MONITORIA device will, also, have a function that sends shocks or functions as a pacemaker to treat certain arrhythmias/blockades. This function can be activated the very first time the patient utilizes it, based on their risk of sudden cardiac death. Discussion/Conclusions: MONITORIA is a promising device mostly because it is included in a follow-up program that takes into account a multi-perspective feature of HF development and is based on the real world patient, adapting innovations not to the disease but rather to the patients.
