Digital Services in Immersive Urban Virtual Environments

Abstract
Virtual Environments (VE) systems may provide a new way to deliver information and services in many areas, for example in tourism, urban planning and education. In urban VE there is a close link between the virtual environment and the urban environment that are intended to represent. These VE can be an intuitive way to access a set of services with a direct association to the real object or entity to which they are related. In this article, we describe a case study that aimed at exploring the possibility of using new interfaces to exploit and use services in urban VE with a greater sense of immersiveness. The results indicate that the VE interfaces are a natural and intuitive access to digital services. While users have felt a greater difficulty in performing some of the tasks in immersive scenario, the majority considered that this scenario provided a greater sense of immersion and realism.

Is Kinect Depth Data Accurate for the Aesthetic Evaluation after Breast Cancer Surgeries?

Abstract
The conservative treatment is now the preferred procedure to treat breast cancer mainly due to better aesthetical results obtained. However, the aesthetic outcome is diverse and very difficult to evaluate, which motivates the research on automatic methodologies. The use of three-dimensional (3D) methodologies is increasing; however, the high cost of the equipment and the need for specialised technicians to operate it are import setbacks. Consequently, the search for affordable and easy to perform equipments is highly desirable. This paper studies the application of a Kinect device in this field, addressing issues related to accuracy, resolution and quality of the data. The paper demonstrates a comparative study of state-of-the-art Super-Resolution (SR) algorithms applied to the Kinect depth data, and the importance to improve the quality of images is stressed. The results demonstrate that it is possible to measure volumetric information and that there is agreement between features and the subjective aesthetic evaluation.

Abstract
A novel optical fiber sensor is presented for measuring dissolved CO2 for water quality monitoring applications, where the optical signal is based either on refractive index changes or on color change. The sensing chemistry is based on the acid-basic equilibrium of 4-nitrophenol, that is converted into the anionic form by addition quaternary ammonium hydroxide. The CO2 sensitive layer was characterized and tested by using simple absorbance/reflectance measurement setups where the sensor was connected to a fiber optic CCD spectrometer. A prototype simulating a real shallow raceway aquaculture system was developed and its hydraulic behavior characterized. A commercially available partial-pressure-NDIR sensor was used as a reference for dissolved CO2 tests with the new optical fiber sensor under development. Preliminary tests allowed verifying the suitability of the new optical sensor for accurately tracking the dissolved carbon dioxide concentration in a suitable operation range. Direct comparison of the new sensor and the reference sensor system allowed to demonstrate the suitability of the new technology but also to identify some fragilities there are presently being addressed.

Intelligent remuneration and tariffs for virtual power players

Abstract
Power systems have been through deep changes in recent years, namely due to the operation of competitive electricity markets in the scope the increasingly intensive use of renewable energy sources and distributed generation. This requires new business models able to cope with the new opportunities that have emerged. Virtual Power Players (VPPs) are a new type of player that allows aggregating a diversity of players (Distributed Generation (DG), Storage Agents (SA), Electrical Vehicles (V2G) and consumers) to facilitate their participation in the electricity markets and to provide a set of new services promoting generation and consumption efficiency, while improving players' benefits. A major task of VPPs is the remuneration of generation and services (maintenance, market operation costs and energy reserves), as well as charging energy consumption. This paper proposes a model to implement fair and strategic remuneration and tariff methodologies, able to allow efficient VPP operation and VPP goals accomplishment in the scope of electricity markets. © 2013 IEEE.

A Conceptual Architecture Based on Intelligent Services for Manufacturing Support Systems

Abstract
The contribution of this paper is a conceptual architecture based on intelligent services for manufacturing support systems. Current approaches cannot cope with the dynamism inherent in the manufacturing domain, where unexpected and drastic changes occur at any time and affect cross-boundary systems. Our approach alleviates these issues and focuses on the need for supporting real-time automatic negotiation, planning, scheduling and optimisation, intra and across factories. We present an execution example of our approach in the aerospace industry, instantiating the conceptual architecture using different technologies. With this we push forward a new definition of Intelligent Services and indicate future work in the area.
