A proposal for detection and estimation of golf putting

Abstract
This study presents an experimental research design of a PhD work, studying the effectsof the variability in the performance of the Golf putting. The instruments used to analyze the putting were two digital cameras to detect the relevant dynamic objects (i.e., ball and putter) and a biaxial accelerometer to confirm the exactmoment at which the putter hits the ball. To synchronize the instruments, it was used a trigger. The ball’s trajectory and the putting movement were automatically analyzed based on visual detection and parameter estimation. The kinematic analysis of the putting was performed using the Matlab software, to determine the amplitude, velocity and acceleration of the players’gestures. We concluded that the Golf putting action parameters are divided into different stages(i.e., backswing, downswing and follow-through) and that those can be useful to investigate the effects of variability in this movement. © Springer Science+Business Media Dordrecht 2014.

Abstract
The use of technology has increased significantly, so it is important to make the information available and accessible for all people. Through the efforts to promote accessibility, users with visual disabilities have increasingly enjoyed the services provided by the Internet. These technologies tend to approach the reality of theirs members by everyday signs (metaphors), which, when combined with cultural factors, may be used as communication artifacts of approach or detachers between two people from different realities. A 3D low-cost solution for the aesthetic evaluation of breast cancer conservative treatment

Abstract
Breast cancer conservative treatment (BCCT) is now the preferred technique for breast cancer treatment. The limited reproducibility of standard aesthetic evaluation methods led to the development of objective methods, such as the software tool Breast Cancer Conservative Treatment.cosmetic results (BCCT.core). Although results are satisfying, there are still limitations concerning complete automation and the inability to measure volumetric information. With the fundamental premise of maintaining the system a low-cost tool, this work studies the incorporation of the Microsoft Kinect sensor in BCCT evaluations. The aim is to enable the automatic joint detection of prominent points, both on depth and RGB images. Afterwards, using those prominent points, it is possible to obtain two-dimensional and volumetric features. Finally, the aesthetic result is achieved using machine learning techniques converted automatically from the set of measures defined. Experimental results show that the proposed algorithm is accurate and robust for a wide number of patients. In addition, comparing with previous research, the procedure for detecting prominent points was automated. © 2013 © 2013 Taylor & Francis.

MobBIO: A Multimodal Database Captured with a Portable Handheld Device

Abstract
Biometrics represents a return to a natural way of identification: testing someone by what (s) he is, instead of relying on something (s) he owns or knows seems likely to be the way forward. Biometric systems that include multiple sources of information are known as multimodal. Such systems are generally regarded as an alternative to fight a variety of problems all unimodal systems stumble upon. One of the main challenges found in the development of biometric recognition systems is the shortage of publicly available databases acquired under real unconstrained working conditions. Motivated by such need the MobBIO database was created using an Asus EeePad Transformer tablet, with mobile biometric systems in mind. The proposed database is composed by three modalities: iris, face and voice.

Abstract
Nowadays, with the large-scale penetration of distributed and renewable energy resources, Electrical Energy Storage (EES) stands out for its ability of adding flexibility, controlling intermittence and providing back-up generation to electrical networks. It represents the critical link between the energy supply and demand chains and, moreover, a key element for increasing the role and attractiveness of renewable generation into the power grid, providing numerous technical and economic benefits to the power system stakeholders. On islanded systems and micro-grids, being updated about the state-of-the-art of EES systems and their benefits becomes even more relevant. Hence, in the present paper a comprehensive analysis of EES leading technologies' main assets, research issues, global market figures, economic benefits and technical applications is provided.

Abstract
This paper presents a comparative analysis of Free/Libre Open Source Software (FLOSS) Learning Management System (LMS). Following a selection process we analyze the functionalities and characteristics of 8 tools commonly used in formal and informal education. More specifically we focus on the availability of different tools concerning communication and assistance, such as, forum, email, calendar, portfolios, etc. Our analysis showed that despite their similarities, the appropriateness of different FLOSS LMSs can be greatly affected by the specific needs of students, instructors and institutions. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2014.
