President of INESC Porto’s Scientific Advisory Board granted with “Honorary Doctorate” title

José Carlos Príncipe, president of INESC Porto’s Scientific Advisory Board and professor at the University of Florida was granted the title of “Honorary Doctorate” by the Universidade Federal do Maranhão (UFMA), on 23 June.

27th July 2008

The award was handed by the rector of UFMA who highlighted the scientific advances reached by José Carlos Príncipe, especially in the area of Biomedical Engineering. “The quality and the results of the work carried out by José Carlos Príncipe contribute to the betterment of teaching, research, technological development and for the good of mankind. Science has no borders: knowledge is universal”, he stated.

Also, the Education and Information Technology Adviser from that university has honoured José Carlos Príncipe by quoting the Portuguese poet, Fernando Pessoa: “Everything is worth it if the soul is not small. The scientist is an artist, a creator, a dreamer. Our guest isn’t just a great professor, but someone who crosses the seas of ignorance and of the unknown in order to bring the light”.

The professor was extremely delighted, stating that “this is a great honour because this title is the maximum degree granted to a professor. I am very glad, especially because the title was granted by a Brazilian University”.

The title of “Honorary Doctorate” is usually granted by the University Council to people who do not belong to the teaching staff, but contribute significantly to the areas of knowledge that that university deals with.
