INESC TEC Summer Research Internships

- APPLY HERE -

INESC TEC is promoting a new edition of the Summer Research Interships, where young students can turn theory into practice to solve real world problems. The main goal is to provide a first research experience to those who seek to learn more about research and development activities, complementing their training and eventually creating conditions for future collaborations.

This initiative offers a hands-on immersive research experience, during which students will be integrated into one of INESC TEC's research centres, to explore and understand how research is conducted and how it contributes to the development and creation of innovative solutions, having access to state of the art infrastructure, equipment, and technologies, allowing to work under real research conditions.

In the end, this opportunity will have allowed to expand practical knowledge by applying academic acquired skills, and develop transversal skills such as collaboration, cooperation, and teamwork.

Topics addressed:

  • Artificial Intelligence
  • Bioengineering
  • Communications
  • Computer Science and Engineering
  • Power and Energy Systems
  • Photonics
  • Robotics
  • Systems Engineering and Management

The internships will have a minimum duration of four weeks, taking place during the month of July, with the supervision, mentoring and guidance of experienced researchers.

Some internships may give you the opportunity to work on real challenges proposed by INESC TEC’s partner organisations. Students will have the chance to join research teams and collaborate with professionals in the field. In some cases, even spend time within the organisations themselves — a unique opportunity to see how science and technology solve everyday problems.

These internships are not paid, as they are considered a complement to academic training.

Moreover, it is possible to ensure equivalence with the curricular internship, mandatory to complete the degree at certain Higher Education Institutions, with which INESC TEC has agreements. More information below.

At the end of the internship, participants must give a short presentation on the work carried out, during a final session that will also serve as a moment of synthesis and presentation of the research internship report. The internships will be evaluated and a ‘Best Internship’ distinction will be awarded to participants who stand out for their rigor, the quality of the work carried out, and the excellence demonstrated throughout the internship period. In the end, everyone will receive a certificate of participation and completion of the internship.

Applications:

All undergraduate or master's students exploring areas associated with the topics addressed can apply.

Applicants must be enrolled in a Higher Education Institution at the time of applying for the internship.

More than one candidate may be accepted for each theme. The total number to be offered will vary according to the nature of the work plan, the availability of resources and the quality of the candidates.

The internships require full-time participation. The work can be done in person, online, or in a hybrid format, depending on the nature of the work plan. The topics on offer indicate which format is desirable, but another format can be agreed with the supervisor, subject to availability.

To apply for INESC TEC’s Summer Research Internships, this application form is needed.

All applications will be evaluated and ranked by the supervisors within the same research area. This evaluation process will have in account the preferred internship topics. Accepted applications will depend on the match between the interest expressed by the candidate, and the positions available in each area. The selection panel may also request further interviews or additional information, whenever deemed necessary.

The evaluation and selection processes are expected to last two weeks; after this period, all applicants will be notified by email with the results.

Curricular equivalence:

If you wish to have an equivalence with the curricular internship, it will be the candidate's responsibility to make sure, before applying, that all the necessary requirements are met so that this internship is recognised by the intitution he/she is enrolled in. Here you can find a brief example of the conditions and procedures necessary.
