Dynamic Data Radio Bearer Management for O-RAN Slicing in 5G Standalone Networks

Abstract
The rapid growth of data traffic and evolving service demands are driving a shift from traditional network architectures to advanced solutions. While 5G networks provide reduced latency and higher availability, they still face limitations due to reliance on integrated hardware, leading to configuration and interoperability challenges. The emerging Open Radio Access Network (O-RAN) paradigm addresses these issues by enabling remote configuration and management of virtualized components through open interfaces, promoting cost-effective, multi-vendor interoperability. Network slicing, a key 5G enabler, allows for tailored network configurations to meet heterogeneous performance requirements. The main contribution of this paper is a private Standalone 5G network based on O-RAN, featuring a dynamic Data Radio Bearer Management xApp (xDRBM) for real-time metric collection and traffic prioritization. xDRBM optimizes resource usage and ensures performance guarantees for specific applications. Validation was conducted in an emulated environment representative of real-world scenarios.

COMBINING BATTERIES AND SYNCHRONOUS CONDENSERS: THE CASE STUDY OF MADEIRA ISLAND

Abstract
This paper investigates the stability of a converter-dominated islanded power system when the island’s battery energy storage converters are operated in different control modes (Grid Forming and Grid Following) and combined with different volumes of synchronous compensation. The study is conducted in a realistic simulation model of the future Madeira island, where no thermal generation is present, and the share of converter-based Renewable Energy Sources is large (75 to 80 % of instantaneous penetration). The impact of the different combinations of synchronous condensers and BESS converter control modes on the system stability is evaluated using a stability index-based approach that accounts for multiple operation scenarios. In this procedure, the system’s dynamic response to the reference disturbances (short-circuits in the Transmission and Distribution Network) is obtained via RMS dynamic simulation and is then analyzed to extract two stability indices (Nadir and Rocof). Such indices are computed for the synchronous generator speed and the grid electrical frequency (measured in different points using a PLL) and are later used as the basis for discussion and conclusion drawing.

Abstract
This paper studies a real world dedicated parallel machine scheduling problem with sequence dependent setups, different machine release dates and additional resources (PMSR). To solve this problem, two previously proposed models have been adapted and a novel objective function, the minimisation of the sum of the machine completion times, is proposed to reflect the real conditions of the manufacturing environment that motivates this work. One model follows the strip-packing approach and the other is time-indexed. The solutions obtained show that the new objective function provides a compact production schedule that allows the simultaneous minimisation of machine idle times and setup times. In conclusion, this study provides valuable insights into the effectiveness of different models for solving PMSR problems in real-world contexts and gives directions for future research in this area using complementary approaches such as matheuristics.

Designing Stemie, the Evolution of the Kid Grígora Educational Robot

Abstract
STEM education advances at the same rate as the need for new and more evolved tools. This article introduces the latest version of the Kid Grígora educational robot, based on the work of Barradas et al. (2019). Targeted for students aged 8 to 18, the robot serves as an interdisciplinary teaching tool, integrated into STEM curricula. The upgraded version corrects what we’ve learned from a real test with 177 students from a Portuguese school and adds other features that allow this new robot to be used in even more educational STEM and problem-solving scenarios. We focused on the creation of a second beta version of the prototype, named Stemie, and its heuristic evaluation by three experts. After all the issues and suggestions from the experts have been resolved and implemented, the new version is ready for usability evaluation.

The impact of the single supervisory mechanism on Eurozone banking: the assessment of trends in efficiency and frontier position

Abstract
The Single Supervisory Mechanism (SSM) was implemented as a first step towards a Banking Union in November 2014. This paper investigates the impact of the SSM on Eurozone banks' efficiency and position of best-practice frontier. It is based on a balanced panel analysis of 931 European bank-year observations from 2011 to 2017 (133 banks, seven years). The study uses Data Envelopment Analysis and a difference-in-differences approach to explore the evolution of banking performance. We found that the SSM had a negative impact on the efficiency levels of Eurozone banks, particularly in the year after the introduction of the mechanism. Additionally, we observed that the frontier formed by non-Eurozone European Union banks is more productive than the frontier of Eurozone banks in all the years analysed. Both efficiency and frontier position show evidence of a recovery trend in more recent years for both groups. We also found that while Equity-to-Asset Ratio, Return on Average Assets and Gross Domestic Product per capita positively impacted banks' efficiency, domestic credit provided by banks expressed as %GDP had a negative impact on efficiency.
