An innovative strategy for power system restoration using utility scale wind parks

Abstract
This paper presents an innovative Power System Restoration (PSR) that exploits the flexibility offered by large offshore wind parks, in particular with HVDC connection with Voltage Source converter (VSC) technology, to support restoration following a black out in a typical transmission grid. Restoration sequences comparing different strategies in a VHV AC network with conventional generation (thermal units and hydro units) were implemented for two cases: with and without the participation of a large offshore wind farm in the restoration plan. In order to evaluate the benefit of using Utility scale Wind Parks to support PSR, a typical transmission network with all its models (including HVDC link with DC converter) was implemented in EUROSTAG simulation platform. © 2013 IEEE.

A remote long-period grating sensor with electrical interrogation assisted by Raman amplification

Abstract
In this work, we present a method to predict the behaviour of a remote optical fiber sensor system based on a long period grating, Raman amplification and electrical interrogation were investigated. The interrogation unit is composed by two fiber Bragg gratings modulated by two piezoelectrics transductors. Optical fiber sensor systems are typically limited to operate at distances of only few kilometers due to the attenuation effects and noise that adversely affects the performance of the sensor interrogation process. We present experimental and simulation results obtained in the context of analysis of remote optical fiber sensors. The simulation models use numerical methods to compute the Raman interaction between the pumps and the sensor signals and allow speeding up the analyses regarding the setup to be experimentally implemented to measure environmental temperature. The results obtained show that under Raman amplification the power ratio between the two central wavelengths of the FBGs has a linear relation with the change of the LPG resonance induced by temperature variation.

Risk-Constrained Scheduling and Offering Strategies of a Price-Maker Hydro Producer Under Uncertainty

Abstract
This paper presents a stochastic mixed-integer linear programming (SMILP) approach to maximize total expected profit of one price-maker hydro producer in a pool-based electricity market. Head dependence, commitment decisions, discharge ramping, startup costs and forbidden zones are all effectively handled in our approach. Uncertainty about the competitors' offers is adequately represented by residual demand curves (RDCs) scenarios. The management of risk is suitably addressed by conditional value-at-risk (CVaR) to provide the efficient frontier, i.e., the solutions set for which the expected profit may not be augmented without enlarging the variance of profit. Appropriate offering strategies to the pool are also developed, consisting of supply functions built for different risk levels. A representative cascaded hydro system with 7 reservoirs is considered to analyze and compare risk-neutral versus risk-averse results.

Desenvolvimento e validação de uma escala de auto-eficácia alimentar

Abstract
Self-efficacy refers to the beliefs in the ability to organise and implement the action plans needed to achieve a certain result and the feeling of control over the behaviours and environment. It determines the initiation, maintenance and cessation of strategies or behaviours, being a good predictor of eating behaviour. Despite its potential in terms of research, prognosis and evaluation of interventions, we are unaware of instruments to assess global features of food self-efficacy validated for the Portuguese population. The aim of this work is to develop and validate a scale to assess general features of food self-efficacy ("Escala de Auto-Eficácia Alimentar Global"). We evaluated a sample of 276 higher education students, and the analysis was performed separately for the subsamples of females and males. The items were created through the adaptation of the six items of the self-efficacy subscale of the "Inventário Clínico de Auto-Conceito" (Serra, 1986). The analysis led to the maintenance of five of the six items initially considered. The scale shows an unifactorial structure, and the proportion of total variance explained by the principal components extracted is higher than 64%. It also shows good internal consistency, with values of Cronbach's alpha above 0.85. The study of relations with other measures showed evidence of its convergent and discriminant validities. The "Escala de Auto-Eficácia Alimentar Global" may prove to be an useful tool for the prognosis and the evaluation of interventions related to the change in eating habits.

Abstract
The large-scale integration of distributed energy resources into a complex cyber-physical system demands proper automation platforms for monitoring, control, optimization and reconfiguration, addressing intelligent energy systems. This paper discusses the use of multi-agent systems as a suitable solution to address this challenge by analyzing their benefits when applying them to the field of Smart Grids and surveying existing works and initiatives. The principles and use cases established in the MASGrid project illustrate the application of multi-agent technology in active power distribution systems.
