Superimposed Bragg gratings in high-birefringence fibre optics: three-parameter simultaneous measurements

Abstract
We used a pair of Bragg gratings written in high birefringence fibre optics to measure, simultaneously, longitudinal and transverse strain and temperature. The Bragg gratings are superimposed in the same position of the fibre optic, so as to behave as a punctual sensor. The sensitivity of the spectral response of the device to longitudinal strain, transverse strain and temperature are all characterized, and the results of its application as a three-parameter sensor are also presented.

A study of the optical properties of photopolymer Fabry-Perot microcavities by a dual-wavelength fibre optic architecture

Abstract
We present a novel method to study the behaviour of the optical propel-ties of photopolymer materials with temperature. The photopolymer is deposited on the tip of optical fibres by dip coating to fabricate low-finesse Fabry-Perot microcavities. The signal processing technique utilized to interrogate the cavity is based on the generation of two quadrature phase-shifted interferometric signals using two Bragg fibre gratings. This technique enables the determination of the values of the thermo-optical coefficient and the linear coefficient of thermal expansion of the photopolymer. The effectiveness of the processing technique is also exploited in the study of the dependence of the temperature sensitivity on the cavity thickness.

Fiber Bragg Grating Structures with Fused Tapers

Abstract
Fiber structures based on the combination of abrupt tapers and fiber Bragg gratings are studied. Two situations are exploredin one, the taper is fabricated in the fiber region with a fiber Bragg grating; in the other, the taper is first fabricated followed by the fiber Bragg grating. It is shown that the first device presents the properties of a Fabry-Perot cavity and the other of a phase-shifted Bragg grating, where the phase shift is associated to the tapered fiber region. The sensing characteristics of these structures are studied, and it is shown that the temperature sensitivities are similar but with observable different responses to strain.

Optical fiber interferometer for measuring the d(33) coefficient of piezoelectric thin films with compensation of substrate bending

Abstract
An optical fiber interferometer for measuring the d(33) coefficient of piezoelectric samples is described. Its configuration is based on the Mach-Zehnder interferometer, and a double incidence on the thin-film samples successfully suppresses the undesirable bending effect of the substrate. Detection of the small displacement is based on an active homodyne scheme. Results are reported for a bulk piezoelectric transducer (PZT) sample and a PZT thin-film incorporated in a microactuator. A fiber-optic system for three-phase current sensing using a hybrid sensing technique

Abstract
We describe and demonstrate a new hybrid current sensor system which uses a novel time division multiplexed fiber network for the measurement of three-phase currents at high potential. The sensor arrangement combines a conventional current transformer with a fiber-optic interferometer such that the signal is transmitted optically to ground. Sensitivities of ~0.5 A/vHz are obtained in each phase at the line frequency of 50 Hz. The sensitivity and dynamic range of each sensor can be tailored for a specific level of current or according to an individual application.

Multiplexing of fibre optic intensity sensors using fused biconical wavelength selective couplers

Abstract
Fused biconical wavelength division multiplexers have been used to replace standard couplers in an intensity-sensor multiplexing network. The wavelength-selective power splitting and the low insertion losses of these devices (< 0.2dB) improve the power budget, while providing network overall optical isolations > 30dB. With this isolation, crosstalk effects in the network are proven to be negligible.
