Optimization of Production Planning and Scheduling in the Ice Cream Industry

Abstract
As in other segments of the food industry, the ice-cream industry has its own features that influence the production management of its processes. Amongst these we identify: changeover tasks, products shelf-life, raw-materials (RM) perishability and, multiple deliveries during the planning horizon. These aspects have been often left out when studying the production planning and scheduling within the batch food industries. Thus, the aim of this work is to define an optimal planning and scheduling model based on the Resource Task Network, where the profit maximization is performed taking into account the cost trade-off between the approach based on the perishable RM inventory for the planning horizon versus the just-in-time RM delivery policy. The study is motivated by a Portuguese artisanal ice-cream industry.

Handling healthcare workforce planning with care: where do we stand?

Abstract
Background: Planning the health-care workforce required to meet the health needs of the population, while providing service levels that maximize the outcome and minimize the financial costs, is a complex task. The problem can be described as assessing the right number of people with the right skills in the right place at the right time, to provide the right services to the right people. The literature available on the subject is vast but sparse, with no consensus established on a definite methodology and technique, making it difficult for the analyst or policy maker to adopt the recent developments or for the academic researcher to improve such a critical field. Methods: We revisited more than 60 years of documented research to better understand the chronological and historical evolution of the area and the methodologies that have stood the test of time. The literature review was conducted in electronic publication databases and focuses on conceptual methodologies rather than techniques. Results: Four different and widely used approaches were found within the scope of supply and three within demand. We elaborated a map systematizing advantages, limitations and assumptions. Moreover, we provide a list of the data requirements necessary to implement each of the methodologies. We have also identified past and current trends in the field and elaborated a proposal on how to integrate the different methodologies. Conclusion: Methodologies abound, but there is still no definite approach to address HHR planning. Recent literature suggests that an integrated approach is the way to solve such a complex problem, as it combines elements both from supply and demand, and more effort should be put in improving that proposal.

Stochastic partner selection for virtual enterprises: a chance-constrained approach

Abstract
A virtual enterprise (VE) is a temporary organisation that pools the core competencies of its member enterprises in order to exploit fast-changing market opportunities. Making successful collaborative partnerships is, in this context, a major challenge in today's competitive business environments. The success of such a 'virtual' organisation is strongly dependent on its composition, and the selection of partners becomes therefore a crucial issue. This problem is particularly difficult because of the uncertainties related to information, market dynamics, customer expectations and technology speed-up, with a strongly stochastic decision-making context. In this paper, a chance-constrained approach to rank alternative VE configurations in business environments with uncertainty, and vague and random information, is proposed. This approach is based on a two-stage model: a chance-constraint multi-objective directional Tabu Search metaheuristic, complemented by a 2-tuple fuzzy linguistic representation model. Preliminary computational results clearly demonstrate the potential of the approach for practical application.

Virtual Enterprise Process Monitoring: An Approach towards Predictive Industrial Maintenance

Abstract
A virtual enterprise management platform is proposed with the objective to simplify the formation, management, adaptation and monitoring of the dynamic manufacturing process in VE. Within this platform an integration black box is highlighted to monitor the process data. This black box is used as a smart object to collect updated data or information from the business process or equipment within the VE. The raw data for predictive maintenance is collected by the black box from programmable logic controllers via gateway interface. A dashboard user interface is also designed and developed within the scope of this research that acts as a visualization tool to display the process monitored data. The theme of this research is designed and developed within the scope of the European Commission NMP priority of the Seventh RTD Framework Programme for the ADVENTURE (ADaptive Virtual ENterprise ManufacTURing Environment) project. © Springer International Publishing Switzerland 2015.

A review of performance criteria to validate simulation models

Abstract
This study reviews performance criteria adequate to validate simulation models through the comparison of two quantitative data sets, concerning historical and simulated data. The criteria reviewed were organized according to its characteristics into the groups: error-based measures, information theory measures, information criteria, parametric tests, non-parametric tests, distance-based measures and combined measures. Each criterion is reviewed through its mathematic definition, its applications in literature and the identification of its advantages and drawbacks. The features assessed by each criterion are identified and discussed. This study provides a concise outline over the criteria reviewed, which can be used as a guide to help developers of simulation models into the decision on the most appropriate criteria to validate their models.
