The Importance of the Maintenance Area in the Hotel Sector

Abstract
The hotel sector is a diversified and highly technical sector, where the complexity of the facilities, the specific characteristics, and requirements of the area, as well as the regulations and applicable legislation, constitute an enormous challenge. Thus, a structured maintenance plan must include periodic intervention, the proper functioning of equipment, along with a greater reliability of services and energy efficiency. All these aspects will ensure greater protection and comfort to the customers of the hotel units and will enable the effective management of resources, impacting on the overall costs represented by the maintenance area in a hotel structure. This article aims to demonstrate the key importance of the maintenance area in the hotel sector, concluding that hotel facilities’ management enables processes’ optimisation, providing a significant contribution for the processes’ dynamics and the overall performance of the hotel, the staff and, therefore, the hospitality business. © 2022, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd.

Worker Assignment in Dual Resource Constrained Systems Subject to Machine Failures: A Simulation Study

Abstract
A production system constrained by workers and machines, where machines are not fully staffed and workers can be transferred between machines, is here considered. Previous simulation research on this type of dual resource constrained production systems assumes that machines are fully reliable. However, this is questionable in most practical situations. Discrete event simulation is used as research method to assess the impact of machine failures on where to transfer workers. Experimentation was carried out for different levels of machine availability, worker utilization and worker assignment rules. Results show that the modified operation due date rule for worker assignment improves tardiness related performance for all production situations considered. This rule shifts between a focus on completing jobs on dune and a focus on speeding up jobs with short processing time. Results further show that ignoring the machine state at worker assignment may lead to significant performance deterioration. For a machine availability of 97% and a worker utilization of 90%, a deterioration between 101% and 416% on the percentage of tardy jobs was observed, compared to scenarios where machines are always available. However, if the machine state is considered, deterioration ranges only between 11% and 30% under the same conditions. 'This highlights the need to considered machine availability at worker assigment.

Health behaviours as predictors of the Mediterranean diet adherence: a decision tree approach

Abstract
Objective: This study aimed to identify health behaviours that determine adolescent's adherence to the Mediterranean diet (MD) through a decision tree statistical approach. Design: Cross-sectional study, with data collected through a self-fulfilment questionnaire with five sections: (1) eating habits; (2) adherence to the MD (KIDMED index); (3) physical activity; (4) health habits and (5) socio-demographic characteristics. Anthropometric and blood pressure data were collected by a trained research team. The Automatic Chi-square Interaction Detection (CHAID) method was used to identify health behaviours that contribute to a better adherence to the MD. Setting: Eight public secondary schools, in Algarve, Portugal. Participants: Adolescents with ages between 15 and 19 years (n 325). Results: According to the KIDMED index, we found a low adherence to MD in 9 center dot 0 % of the participants, an intermediate adherence in 45 center dot 5 % and a high adherence in 45 center dot 5 %. Participants that regularly have breakfast, eat vegetable soup, have a second piece of fruit/d, eat fresh or cooked vegetables 1 or more times a day, eat oleaginous fruits at least 2 to 3 times a week, and practice sports and leisure physical activities outside school show higher adherence to the MD (P < 0 center dot 001). Conclusions: The daily intake of two pieces of fruit and vegetables proved to be a determinant health behaviour for high adherence to MD. Strategies to promote the intake of these foods among adolescents must be developed and implemented.

Performance Evaluation of Dispatching Rules and Simulated Annealing in a Scheduling Problem from a Quality-Functionality Perspective

Abstract
Production scheduling generates a direct impact on several aspects of manufacture, such as the number of delays in delivery to customers, total flow time, as well as the percentage of equipment used. It must, therefore, constitute a priority in production management, which should seek to implement scheduling techniques that will lead to positive results from the perspective of the quality of the solution. However, the methodology cannot overlook the functional aspect of the time which has elapsed until the solution is reached. This study is based on a real and specific module software improvement into a company devoted to the development of ERP software systems (Enterprise Resource Planning). It presents a solution for the production scheduling module focused on flow-shop operations, comprising a total of nine dispatching rules. An additional solution for scheduling is also proposed, which resorts to metaheuristic simulated annealing. Both solutions are compared to each other by using the quality-functionality binomial approach. These two environments are further contrasted with a third, where no effective solution for production scheduling exists. The environment which includes scheduling through dispatching rules was compared to the environment where no production scheduling was implemented. The results obtained from this analysis show an improvement of 13%. The simulated annealing solution presents an improvement of 3,6% when compared to a solution which uses dispatching rules. This improvement implies one extra minute in the calculation of the final solution.

Image Recognition-Based Architecture to Enhance Inclusive Mobility of Visually Impaired People in Smart and Urban Environments

Abstract
The demographic growth that we have witnessed in recent years, which is expected to increase in the years to come, raises emerging challenges worldwide regarding urban mobility, both in transport and pedestrian movement. The sustainable development of cities is also intrinsically linked to urban planning and mobility strategies. The tasks of navigation and orientation in cities are something that we resort to today with great frequency, especially in unknown cities and places. Current navigation solutions refer to the precision aspect as a big challenge, especially between buildings in city centers. In this paper, we focus on the segment of visually impaired people and how they can obtain information about where they are when, for some reason, they have lost their orientation. Of course, the challenges are different and much more challenging in this situation and with this population segment. GPS, a technique widely used for navigation in outdoor environments, does not have the precision we need or the most beneficial type of content because the information that a visually impaired person needs when lost is not the name of the street or the coordinates but a reference point. Therefore, this paper includes the proposal of a conceptual architecture for outdoor positioning of visually impaired people using the Landmark Positioning approach.

Abstract
The urban development model practiced in the past has proved to be unsustainable. Due to this fact, cities such as Rio de Janeiro, with high population density, mainly regarding precarious settlements, need immediate practical actions to become more sustainable. The insufficiency of planning and investments contributed to the city occupying the 8th position of the most vulnerable cities in the world, triggering the primary motivation of the research study. Therefore, the leading research focused on exploring how sustainable habitats could contribute to Rio de Janeiro becoming more sustainable. A document analysis was carried out, and semi-structured interviews were designed, making it possible to identify projects to create sustainable habitats for Rio de Janeiro that can serve as benchmarks and listen to the engineers and architects regarding the importance of the sustainable building. Thus, consonant to structural changes in thinking, producing, consuming, and living, it was also possible to identify the main contributions of sustainable habitats to the city, classifying them within the pillars of sustainability.
