Abstract
This paper presents part of the findings of a research project aiming at characterising high-performance collaborative business networks and at defining the conditions required for their creation and management. The project adopted a multiple case study research strategy and three different business networks are presented in this paper. Empirical studies have been performed in Northern Portugal. The results of the study include operational definitions based on a comprehensive literature review, a conceptual reference framework for the analysis of high-performance collaborative networks and recommendations for the creation and management of such networks.

New General Discrete-Time Scheduling Model for Multipurpose Batch Plants

Abstract
This work deals with the optimal short-term scheduling of general multipurpose batch plants, considering multiple operational characteristics such as sequence-dependent changeovers, temporary storage in the processing units, lots blending, and material flows traceability. A novel Mixed Integer Linear Programming (MILP) discrete-time formulation based on the State-Task Network (STN) is proposed, with new types of constraints for modeling changeovers and storage. We also propose some model extensions for addressing changeovers start; nonpreemptive lots; lots start and sizes; alternative task-unit and task-unit-layout assignments. Computational tests have shown that the proposed model is more effective than a similar model based on the Resource-Task Network (RTN).

Design of Performance Assessment System for Selection of Contractors in Construction Industry E-Marketplaces

Abstract
This paper presents a framework to facilitate the selection of the most appropriate company to be contracted among competitive bids. This framework is intended to be integrated in e-marketplaces to comply with the major technological advances in the construction industry. A novel feature of the system is that it allows bilateral evaluations between companies to better understand general contractor-subcontractor relationships and to improve the level of transparency within the construction sector. The performance assessment system incorporates other innovative features, such as the ability to specify a set of performance indicators suitable for inclusion in e-marketplaces covering three different perspectives: company reliability, operation performance, and bid attributes. The system also allows the integration of the preferences of the decision maker concerning the selection of the best company for a given work. (C) 2013 American Society of Civil Engineers.

Abstract
This paper studies the Facility Layout Problem (FLP) of a first tier supplier in the automotive industry. This complex manufacturing system involves multiple facilities, complex products, and layout reconfiguration constraints. One of the key requirements of this particular system is the need for high levels of flexibility in the reconfiguration of the layouts. This problem is formulated as a mixed-integer programming (MIP), based on a FLP model with multiple objectives and unequal areas. The model allows for two reconfiguration types: small and large changes. We explore the application of optimization methodologies to produce efficient and flexible layouts.

Vendor managed inventory (VMI): evidences from lean deployment in healthcare

Abstract
Understanding how VMI benefits serve lean purposes in healthcare and why its outcomes can be difficult to achieve in healthcare settings is the main purpose of this study. An in?depth case study of VMI is presented in the perspective of the downstream member, a public general multi?site hospital, operating as a small scale consolidated service centre in terms of material management, exploring such dimensions as: VMI benefits, risks, barriers and enablers. Despite some unawareness of VMI benefits in healthcare, it can present a waste reduction solution not only in costs but in the quality of care for freeing clinical professionals to clinical tasks, among other savings. The multiple benefits are better explored, as in any relationship building, by investing in partnership creation and overcoming the idiosyncratic barriers of the healthcare sector. Although findings of a single case study are difficult to generalize, the protocol and methodology presented allow replication in other units of analysis with the same inclusion criteria. This paper brings the lean deployment discussion out of the organization's boundaries, showing the interconnections and pointing to the need for future work that would allow healthcare managers to build a lean supply chain. By considering VMI an outsourcing alternative, this paper identifies the lean thinking intent behind such options and enhances the idiosyncratic difficulties in full deployment in the healthcare sector, a less studied setting. © 2013, Emerald Group Publishing Limited
