INESC TEC joins platform set to transform the Blue Economy of Northern Portugal

The PREMI - Plataforma Regional Mar Inteligente - project brings together seven organisations, including INESC TEC, in an entrepreneurial discovery process to define strategic priorities and identify key lines of action for the Blue Economy. The goal is to support the Northern Regional Coordination and Development Commission (CCDR-N) in strengthening the region's ocean-related tech and scientific capabilities.

INESC TEC demonstrates how underwater cables can monitor maritime traffic

What if underwater fibre optic cables could not only “listen” to ships, but also estimate their speed and trajectory? While these cables are mostly known for connecting the world to the Internet, they could also become an important complement to the current Automatic Identification System (AIS) for maritime traffic monitoring.

INESC TEC returns to the Mediterranean to test the detection of “ghost” fishing gear

Following earlier tests in Italy, INESC TEC researchers have returned to the Mediterranean Sea for a new round of demonstrations under the NETTAG+ project, this time off the coast of the island of Vis, in Croatia. Supported by the autonomous vehicle IRIS, the goal was to test the tools developed to locate lost fishing nets on the seabed.

INESC TEC “dived” into an oceanographic campaign across the seamounts of the Madeira–Tore complex

In October, INESC TEC researchers contributed to a new data collection and mapping campaign of the Madeira–Tore geological complex. With the support of the autonomous vehicle EVA, it was possible to collect data and images of the seabed at depths of up to 1,100 metres.

INESCTEC.OCEAN hosted intensive course on “Numerical Modelling and CFD for Maritime Applications”

Between 9 and 11 December, the Centre of Excellence led by INESC TEC hosted a wide range of theoretical and practical sessions dedicated to one of the key topics in ocean engineering: Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD).
