On 25 September, INESC TEC’s Telecommunications and Multimedia Unit (UTM) organised an internal workshop. The goal with this initiative was to implement a common vision for UTM and to understand how it is possible to improve the relationship between universities and industry.

Paulo Portugal and Francisco Vasques, researchers at INESC TEC’s Telecommunications and Multimedia Unit (UTM), won a Best Paper Award as part of the 11th IEEE International Conference on Industrial Informatics (INDIN 2013), which took place between 29 and 31 July in Germany. This is the most important event in Industrial Informatics and one of the most relevant conferences promoted by one of the largest IEEE Societies, the Industrial Electronics Society.

INESC TEC has developed a software to recognise musical scores that was the winner of a competition organised as part of the ICDAR – International Conference on Document Analysis and Recognition. This conference took place in Washington, in the United States, between 25 and 28 August.

Fabien Gouyon, a researcher at INESC TEC’s Telecommunications and Multimedia Unit (UTM), was awarded as part of the international competition “Reproducibility in Audio and Music Research”, promoted by the SoundSoftware.ac.uk service. The results were announced on 26 June.

From 5 to 12 July, several PhD students, researchers and companies participated in the “VISion Understanding and Machine intelligence (VISUM) Summer School”, the first summer school in this area organised by INESC TEC’s Telecommunications and Multimedia Unit (UTM), together with the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Porto (FEUP) and the University of Porto.

Last May, INESC TEC has opened the research programme MAT – Media Arts and Technology. The purpose with this programme is to promote collaboration opportunities in the area of MAT. The programme will be concluded in June 2015.

The results will be presented as part of the ICIAR 2013 - International Conference on Image Analysis and Recognition, which will take place in Póvoa de Varzim, Portugal, between 26 and 28 June.
