The use of virtual worlds in management education: An investigation of current practices in second life

Abstract
Frequently, research on management education does not take into account the role of Information Technology as a key resource to support teaching and learning processes. In this article, the authors explore the current applications of Three Dimensional Virtual Worlds (3DVW) for Management education. The authors researched the educational institutions subscribed to Second Life (SL) (http://secondlife.com/), as it is one of the most popular open 3DVW available worldwide. The results reveal that only 31% of the institutions that answered the authors' questionnaire actually use SL in Management education. Regarding the acceptance of SL in Management education, one third of the 15 institutions using it claim that it has been well received and accepted both by students and lecturers/professors. These results lead to several questions for further research and development of practices concerning the use of 3DVW for Management education.

Security vulnerabilities and risks in industrial usage of wireless communication

Abstract
Due to its availability and low cost, the use of wireless communication technologies increases in domains beyond the originally intended usage areas, e.g. M2M communication in industrial applications. Such industrial applications often have specific security requirements. Hence, it is important to understand the characteristics of such applications and evaluate the vulnerabilities bearing the highest risk in this context. We present a comprehensive overview of security issues and features in existing WLAN, NFC and ZigBee standards, investigating the usage characteristics of these standards in industrial environments. We apply standard risk assessment methods to identify vulnerabilities with the highest risk across multiple technologies. We present a threat catalogue, conclude in which direction new mitigation methods should progress and how security analysis methods should be extended to meet requirements in the M2M domain. © 2014 IEEE.

Abstract
This paper proposes a framework to support the full virtual manufacturing enterprise lifecycle from the creation to the operation and dissolution. The paper will show how the framework supports the activities involved in the setup of virtual manufacturing enterprise, how to run it and which tools are needed. Three main perspectives are considered: knowledge and information, methodology and Technology. A business case analysis is then presented in order to understand the framework applicability to the development of collaborative business opportunities in an engineer-to-order and one-of-a-kind production environments, which is common to a large number of SMEs.

An Architecture for Seamless Configuration, Deployment, and Management of Wireless Sensor-actuator Networks

Abstract
The goal of this work is to provide (non-specialist) users with the means to seamlessly setup and monitor a Wireless Sensor-Actuator Network (WSN) without writing any code or performing subtle hardware configurations. Towards this goal, we present an architecture that allows the seamless configuration, deployment and management of applications over WSN. We explore the fact that most deployments have a common modus operandi: (a) simple data readers running on the nodes periodically gather and send data to sinks, and; (b) sinks process incoming data and, accordingly, issue actuation commands to the nodes. We argue that, given the knowledge of a platform's capabilities, its sensors and actuators and their respective programming interfaces, it is possible to fully automate the process of configuring, building, and deploying an application over a WSN. Similarly, monitoring and managing the deployment can be vastly simplified by using a middleware that supports user defined tasks that process data from the nodes, divide the WSN into regions, defined by simple boolean predicates over data, and eventually issue actuation commands on regions.

Abstract
Software process improvement requires a team composed by highly motivated members, good working capabilities and large experience. This type of team allows the implementation of tools and techniques that help to improve communication, coordination and collaboration and cooperation, thus minimizing failures resulting from the development process. Believing on these principles the 4C model emerged as an improvement of the 3C collaboration model. This model was proposed to analyze the Hybrid Methodology for User Centered Development (HMUCD) used to develop the educational resource Courseware Sere - The Human Being and Natural Resources. The 4 model objective is to analyze and propose improvements to educational software development processes. In this study we describe the 3C collaboration model and its evolution to the 4C model. For this we present the data collection and analysis process as well as the techniques used for data analysis and used on the development of the educational resource - Courseware Sere. The 4C model allowed us to identify improvements to HMUCD by adjusting the current development methods and implementing new methods of User Centered Design.
