Emissions impact of road traffic incidents using Advanced Traveller Information Systems in a regional scale

Abstract
Advanced Traveller Information Systems (ATIS) have been used worldwide to mitigate different road traffic impacts such as traffic congestion. However, the impact of these systems in fuel use and emissions is still an important research topic, due to their non-linear behaviour. Therefore, this paper aims to evaluate the impact of traffic incidents on a regional scale on energy and emissions levels. To achieve these objectives, several scenarios assessing different degrees of information (through the use of ATIS) were analysed. To model both traffic operations and emissions a mesoscopic traffic model (DTALite) and a road emissions methodology (EMEP/EEA) were used. The data related to the characterization of the road network was collected between Oporto and Aveiro, in Portugal. To ensure reliable results, the traffic model was calibrated and validated taking into account statistical methods that compare observed traffic flows and travel times with the values estimated by the model. The simulation platform was then used to assess the impact of traffic incident when it occurs in two different road types (a motorway and a highway), in order to evaluate the impact of usage and availability of information on emissions and fuel consumption. The results show that in a regional road network for each occurred incident, the use of ATIS can allow a maximum reduction of emissions and energy consumption on those routes where they occurred to up 2%. Nonetheless, a global analysis of the network indicates different results depending if the incident occur in a motorway or in a highway. In both cases, drivers tend to choose a route with similar costs to the previously selected. Furthermore, a non-linear trend between the availability of information and the impact on emissions and energy consumption was found. (C) 2014 Published by Elsevier B.V.

Abstract
Conict-free Replicated Datatypes can simplify the design of predictable eventual consistency. They can be classified into state-based or operation-based. Operation-based ap- proaches have the potential for allowing compact designs in both the sent message and the object state size, but cur- rent approaches are still far from this objective. Here we explore the design space for operation-based solutions, and we leverage the interaction with the middleware by offering a technique that delivers very compact solutions, while only broadcasting operation names and arguments. Abstract
A combination of focused ion beam milling and chemical etching is proposed for the creation of Fabry-Perot cavities in microwires. Both simple cavities and cantilevers are created on 15 mu m-diameter microwires and characterized in temperature. The cantilever structure shows sensitivity to vibration and is capable of measuring frequencies in the range 1 Hz - 40 kHz.

Abstract
The framework being proposed addresses the test and measurement of circuits and systems populated with varying types of sensors and functional blocks, among which one can find embedded test instruments. Its conceptual functionality is based on four types of operations: setup, capture, process, and scan (SCPS), and aims to provide a unifying methodology for managing and synchronizing test operations and instruments. The generalized physical structure and examples of operating commands are described. An application illustrates its use in a particular case.

Towards a Framework for Multidirectional Model Transformations

Abstract
The Query/View/Transformation Relations (QVT-R) standard for bidirectional model transformation is notorious for its underspecified semantics. When restricted to transformations between pairs of models, most of the ambiguities and omissions have been addressed in recent work. Nevertheless, the application of the QVT-R language is not restricted to that scenario, and similar issues remain unexplored for the multidirectional case (maintaining consistency between more than two models), that has been overlooked so far. In this paper we first discuss ambiguities and omissions in the QVT-R standard concerning the mutidirectional transformation scenario, and then propose a simple extension and formalization of the checking and enforcement semantics that clarifies some of them. We also discuss how such proposal could be implemented in our Echo bidirectional model transformation tool. Ours is just a small step towards making QVT-R a viable language for bidirectional transformation in realistic applications, and a considerable amount of basic research is still needed to fully accomplish that goal.

RetinaCAD, a System for the Assessment of Retinal Vascular Changes

Abstract
This paper introduces RetinaCAD, a system, for the fast, reliable and automatic measurement of the Central Retinal Arteriolar Equivalent (CRAE), the Central Retinal Venular Equivalent (CRVE), and the Arteriolar-to-Venular Ratio (AVR) values, as well as several geometrical features of the retinal vasculature. RetinaCAD identifies important landmarks in the retina, such as the blood vessels and optic disc, and performs artery/vein classification and vessel width measurement. The estimation of the CRAE, CRVE and AVR values on 480 images from 120 subjects has shown a significant correlation between right and left eyes and also between images of same eye acquired with different camera fields of view. AVR estimation in retinal images of 54 subjects showed the lowest values in people with diabetes or high blood pressure thus demonstrating the potential of the system as a CAD tool for early detection and follow-up of diabetes, hypertension or cardiovascular pathologies.
