Design of a High Efficiency GaN-HEMT RF Power Amplifier

Abstract
This paper presents the design and implementation of a GaN-HEMT, class-J power amplifier suitable for cognitive radio transceivers, i.e., which presents high-efficiency and wideband characteristics, being these maintained for large load variations. Simulation results are presented which show large-signal measurement results of 30 dB gain with 60%-76% power-added efficiency (PAE) over a band of 1.3-2.3 GHz. Adaptivity to load changes is being developed to ensure PAE above 70% for large load variations.

Flexibility in the Formation and Operational Planning of Dynamic Manufacturing Networks

Abstract
The term Dynamic Manufacturing Network (DMN) refers to a new collaborative business model that relies on real-time information sharing, synchronized planning and common business processes. DMNs are operational networks formed among autonomous and globally dispersed partners, and can be seen as the manufacturing industry application of the Virtual Enterprise (VE) concept. Despite their numerous practical benefits such as optimized processes and access to new and global markets, they are particularly vulnerable to disruptions. Any disruption in manufacturing or transportation of products may obviously result in failed orders, thus impacting the whole DMN reliability. Instead of developing stochastic models to deal with uncertainty, as it is usually done, we have rather integrated the concept of flexibility into the tactical and operational planning of such networks. We therefore propose in this work, a multi-objective optimization model that simultaneously maximizes reactive flexibility measures while minimizing total operating costs.

A hybrid path-relinking method for solving two-stage stochastic integer problems

Abstract
Path relinking has been used for solving deterministic problems by exploring the neighborhood of elite solutions in an intelligent way. We present an algorithm that combines a mixed-integer linear solver with a truncated path-relinking method in order to solve two-stage stochastic integer problems with complete recourse and first-stage integer variables. This method takes advantage of a possible scenario-based decomposition in an innovative way. Therefore, path relinking is used to combine optimized solutions from different scenarios in order to pursue good stochastic solutions. To assess the computational performance of this method, we use the stochastic lot sizing and scheduling problem dealing with perishable products. In this problem, first-stage decision variables are linked to production sequences and production quantities. After the uncertain demand is unveiled, the second-stage variables decide on the inventory usage. Computational results show a clear advantage of the proposed method when compared to a state-of-the-art mixed-integer linear solver.

Abstract
In today's business, consumers are challenging manufacturers by increasingly demanding low volumes of innovative, fashionable and inexpensive products; adopting high quality standards; responding in smaller intervals of time, and with high configurability and parameterization. This omnipresent scenario poses challenging opportunities for collaborative networked organizations. The present paper addresses the main collaborative business processes tailored for responsiveness and efficient use of knowledge on customized manufacturing environments through a lean-based framework proposal for collaborative networks inspired in the Set-Based Concurrent Engineering (SBCE) methodology. In particular this work describes the ongoing implementation of the proposed concepts through a web-based collaborative portal.

Digital Sound Processing using Arduino and MATLAB

Abstract
Over the last decade, impelled by the huge open source software community support, the low cost Arduino platform presents itself as an alternative for digital sound processing. Although Arduino is generally used for small applications for the artistic and maker community, its built-in Analog to digital converter can be used for sound capturing, processing and reproduction. Equipped with a powerful AVR 8 bit RISC microcontroller, the Arduino, can achieve up to 200kHz with a 10 bit resolution according to the Atmel ATmega328P datasheet that is the AVR core that we are going to focus on this article. Realizing the hardware potential, software suppliers like Matworks or National instruments, have included the Arduino packages on the software accessories of MATLAB and LABView. This work presents some of the sound capabilities and specific limitations of the Arduino platform, enlacing its connection and installation with MATLAB software. A series of examples of the Arduino interface with MATLAB are detail and shown in order to facilitate users initiation of MATLAB and Arduino Digital Sound Processing enhancing education fostering.

Advanced Control Solutions for Operating Isolated Power Systems: Examining the Portuguese islands

Abstract
The operation of remote and isolated or islanded power systems is often very challenging because of their small system inertia. Moreover, economic and environmental pressure has led to an increasing renewable power penetration, particularly in wind generation and solar photovoltaics (PV). Simultaneously, significant technological progress has been made in terms of control capability of grid assets [generators, controllable loads such as electric vehicles (EVs), and energy storage systems], mostly exploiting the capabilities of power ?electronics. In this context, several advanced control solutions can be implemented, supporting and improving the robustness of the operation in terms of fast frequency and voltage control responses. In this article, the Portuguese islands are taken as a case study. Within the Madeira archipelago (Porto Santo and Madeira islands), two approaches were envisioned. For Porto Santo Island, the main goal is the sizing of a flywheel energy storage system (FESS) to avoid frequency stability problems. For Madeira Island, the objective relies on the exploitation of hydro resources through the quantification of the technical benefits resulting from variable speed hydro pumping stations that are able to provide primary frequency regulation services in the pump operation mode. In addition, this article also addresses the benefits of introducing EVs in Flores Island in the Azores Archipelago. Finally, to support the development of innovative technological solutions for this type of power system, a laboratory setup based on scaled test systems was also set up and is described. A set of applications was specifically developed for such autonomous power systems. The laboratorial infrastructure allowed the testing of ?solutions and prototypes for hardware and software modules related to those applications. © 2013 IEEE.
