Abstract
Despite the studies already developed about Trombe walls, more research work is needed to contribute to the knowledge about their behaviour and optimize it according to the specific characteristics of each climatic region. The ventilation openings and the shading device operation decisively influence the temperatures fluctuation along the system and that impact should be discussed. In this context, a test cell with a classical Trombe wall was submitted to real climatic conditions in a Portuguese city. The effect of ventilation openings and shading devices in the temperatures fluctuation was analysed. The temperatures in the air layer and along the massive wall presented a similar oscillation pattern and exceeded 60 degrees C without ventilation and shading devices. For this configuration, temperature values at the top of the air layer were always higher than those obtained at the base and a differential of 19 degrees C was achieved. The temperature fluctuation across the massive wall was not proportional to its thickness due to its heat storage capacity. When the ventilation system was closed and the shading device was not activated, the temperature inside the test cell exceeded the outside temperature value in 9 degrees C, showing the system ability to store and release heat.

Abstract
This paper presents a robust optimisation framework for long-term composite generation and transmission expansion planning problem which considers inherent uncertainties such as load growth, fuel cost and renewable energy output uncertainties. In this paper, a bi-level robust optimisation framework is proposed to accommodate wind output uncertainty in line with the uncertain demanded loads and uncertain fuel cost. The addressed optimisation problem is modelled as a mixed-integer optimisation framework with the objective of providing a robust expansion plan while maintaining the minimum cost expansion. In order to evaluate the robustness of each plan, an off-line Lattice Monte Carlo simulation technique is adopted in this study. The validity of the proposed method is examined on a simple six-bus and modified IEEE 118-bus test system as a large-scale case study. The simulation results show that the presented method is both satisfactory and consistent with expectation. © 2016 Informa UK Limited, trading as Taylor & Francis Group.

Abstract
In this article we introduce a method to estimate the water current in AUV operation scenarios. The method is based on reciprocal sound transmission between pairs of acoustic navigation beacons, with a minimum of three beacons being required to obtain an estimate of both current velocity and direction. We analyse the sensitivity of the current estimation with respect to the geometry of the beacon location. We demonstrate the applicability of the method with a case study.

Abstract
Optical Y-junction power splitters owe their inherent broadband spectral behavior to their design. However, depending on the fabrication technique employed, asymmetries in the junction might arise, perturbing its performance; this is the case in femtosecond laser written Y-junctions where one arm is typically written over the top of the other. In this letter, the spectral behavior of Y-junctions fabricated in fused silica by the femtosecond laser direct writing technique was analyzed and optimized for the first time, to the best of our knowledge. The junction arms output power balance as well as the corresponding spectral flatness between 1300 and 1600 nm is substantially increased by the implementation of an initial separation between the arms at the junction diverging point, enabling the manufacturing of balanced broadband Y-junctions.
