ROSM - Robotic Oil Spill Mitigation

Abstract
The overall aim of the ROSM project is the implementation of an innovative solution based on heterogeneous autonomous vehicles to tackle maritime pollution (in particular, oil spills). These solutions will be based on native microbial consortia with bioremediation capacity, and the adaptation of air and surface autonomous vehicles for in-situ release of autochthonous microorganisms (bioaugmentation) and nutrients (biostimulation). By doing so, these systems can be used as the first line of the responder to pollution incidents from several origins that may occur inside ports, around industrial and extraction facilities, or during transport activities, in a fast, efficient and low-cost way. The paper will address the development of a team of autonomous vehicles able to carry, as payload, native organisms to naturally degrade oil spills (avoiding the introduction of additional chemical or biological additives), the development of a multi-robot system able to provide a first line responses to oil spill incidents under unfavourable and harsh conditions with low human intervention, and then a decentralized cooperative planning with the ability to coordinate an efficient oil spill combat. Field tests have been performed in Leixoes Harbour in Porto and Medas, Portugal, with a simulated oil spill and validated the decentralized coordinated task between the autonomous surface vehicle (ASV) ROAZ and the unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV).

An holistic monitoring system for measurement of the atmospheric electric field over the ocean - the SAIL campaign

Abstract
The atmospheric electric field is a key characteristic of the Earth system. Despite its relevance, oceanic measurements of the atmospheric electric field are scarce, as typically oceanic measurements tend to be focused on ocean properties rather than on the atmosphere above. This motivated the set-up of an innovative campaign on board the sail ship NRP Sagres focused on the measurement of the atmospheric electric field in the marine boundary layer. This paper describes the monitoring system that was developed to measure the atmospheric electric field during the planned circumnavigation expedition of the sail ship NRP Sagres.

Data fusion approach for unmodified UAV tracking with vision and mmWave Radar

Abstract
The knowledge of the precise 3D position of a target in tracking applications is a fundamental requirement. The lack of a low-cost single sensor capable of providing the three-dimensional position (of a target) makes it necessary to use complementary sensors together. This research presents a Local Positioning System (LPS) for outdoor scenarios, based on a data fusion approach for unmodified UAV tracking, combining a vision sensor and mmWave radar. The proposed solution takes advantage of the radar's depth observation ability and the potential of a neural network for image processing. We have evaluated five data association approaches for radar data cluttered to get a reliable set of radar observations. The results demonstrated that the estimated target position is close to an exogenous ground truth obtained from a Visual Inertial Odometry (VIO) algorithm executed onboard the target UAV. Moreover, the developed system's architecture is prepared to be scalable, allowing the addition of other observation stations. It will increase the accuracy of the estimation and extend the actuation area. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first work that uses a mmWave radar combined with a camera and a machine learning algorithm to track a UAV in an outdoor scenario.

The SAIL dataset of marine atmospheric electric field observations over the Atlantic Ocean

Abstract
A unique dataset of marine atmospheric electric field observations over the Atlantic Ocean is described. The data are relevant not only for atmospheric electricity studies, but more generally for studies of the Earth's atmosphere and climate variability, as well as space-Earth interaction studies. In addition to the atmospheric electric field data, the dataset includes simultaneous measurements of other atmospheric variables, including gamma radiation, visibility, and solar radiation. These ancillary observations not only support interpretation and understanding of the atmospheric electric field data, but also are of interest in themselves. The entire framework from data collection to final derived datasets has been duly documented to ensure traceability and reproducibility of the whole data curation chain. All the data, from raw measurements to final datasets, are preserved in data repositories with a corresponding assigned DOI. Final datasets are available from the Figshare repository (https://figshare.com/projects/SAIL_Data/178500, ), and computational notebooks containing the code used at every step of the data curation chain are available from the Zenodo repository (https://zenodo.org/communities/sail, Project SAIL community, 2025).

The effect of environmental parameters on radon concentration measured in an underground dead-end gallery (Vyhne, Slovakia)

Abstract
Radon concentration was continuously monitored in a horizontal dead-end gallery near Vyhne (Central Slovakia) from October 2005 to April 2008. Hourly average of radon varied from 2800 to 10 500 Bq/m(3). Temporal variation of radon, which contains periodic and non-periodic signals, spans variation of annual to diurnal scale. Time series of radon were analyzed together with meteorological parameters. The annual variation of radon seems to be connected with the annual variation of atmospheric pressure. The amplitude and shape of diurnal variation of radon changed during the year and is correlated with corresponding changes in the daily amplitude of atmospheric pressure.
