EMERGING TECHNOLOGIES AND INFORMATION SYSTEMS FOR THE KNOWLEDGE SOCIETY, PROCEEDINGS
Abstract
This study provides some empirical insight on the barriers that chief information officers face in their Job. The findings of the survey we conducted directed to the chief information officers of the 500 large Portuguese companies by gross revenue, suggest; three main barriers: the lack of time to think and define strategies, the overwhelming backlog of requests and projects and inadequate budgets. The knowledge and understanding of the identified barriers contributes to the characterization of chief information officer role state of the art and should be useful for practitioners, who may use it as a basis for developing solutions in order to overcome these barriers.

Abstract
Benefits provided by music in humans have been reinforced through several studies, mainly by active participation in musical therapy sessons, with surprising results in physical and psychological rehabilitation. However, all the previous implemented approaches require specialized hardware to function and complex configurations to set-up. We define a computational system focused on the elderly to allow musical expressiveness through motion, solely using the resources available in an ordinary home computer. To evaluate our approach, we developed a prototype and piloted acceptance tests on several senior citizens, with an average age of eighty-three. Our experiments showed high levels of interest from the senior citizens, denoting positive capabilities of well-being and life quality enrichment. The performed experiments have also shown that an ordinary computer is capable of performing the proposed methodology, without any restriction. (C) 2012 The Authors. Published by Elsevier B.V. UNIVERSAL ACCESS IN THE INFORMATION SOCIETY
Abstract
In everyday life, people need to move, whether in business or leisure. Navigation requires spatial knowledge and ability to make decisions based on geographic information. Recently, powerful tools have been developed, enhancing the capabilities of geographical analysis and decision-making. This work presents a platform to handle and provide geographic information, including accessibility oriented features. This geographic information system (GIS) is part of a wider project, called SmartVision. The aim of this project is to create a system that allows blind users to navigate in the University of Tras-os-Montes and Alto Douro campus. The GIS platform, together with other modules of the SmartVision system prototype, provides information to blind users, assisting their navigation and giving alerts of nearby points-of-interest or obstacles. Together with the GIS platform, this paper also describes the handling of accessibility information by the SmartVision prototype, namely the Navigation Module, the Computer Vision Module and the Interface Module.

Abstract
As we observe society in our days, we can see that people live longer; this means that we have an older population, more likely to have health issues. The special needs presented by the elderly are becoming a major concern for all of us, along with the lack of time demonstrated by society as a whole and, as a consequence, the lack of time is seen when families are not able to take care of their own elders. Many solutions are being presented in order to solve this problem. Some of them are taking advantage of the new technological developments in the body sensor networks area. In this paper we propose the architecture of a system called Elder Care. The Elder Care solution has two primary goals: monitoring vital signs, sending alerts to family and to specialized help and providing a social network in order to help end the elderly's social isolation. © Copyright by authors.

Abstract
This paper presents the SIDE portal, which is an information system to support teaching, focused on academic management and teaching and learning processes, meeting the needs of integration of information flows from several university information systems. SIDE portal plays a fundamental role in the institution, enabling learning, evaluation and communication without space or time limitations, allowing to meet the challenges of higher education institutions - increase the education capacity and simultaneously be more efficient in academic management processes. © 2011 AISTI.

INFORMATION MANAGEMENT IN THE MODERN ORGANIZATIONS: TRENDS & SOLUTIONS, VOLS 1 AND 2
Abstract
Information technology and information systems have evolved dramatically over the last half-century, playing an absolutely central and crucial role in the success of today's organizations. Therefore the complexity of the work of the chief information officer has also increased significantly with the current demand for the use of more evolved software tools to support the chief information officer job. With the purpose of identifying and characterizing which software tools chief information officers of large Portuguese companies use in their work,, we dei, eloped a study with the participation. of several chief information officers. The study seeks answers to the question: Does the chief information officer in Portuguese large companies uses advanced information technology solutions in his/her work or, as that old saying, the shoemaker's wife is the worse shod. The findings of this study reveal that the chief information officers are not using all the potential of the software tools that would give them a better performance in their jobs.
