Optimizing 5G network slicing with DRL: Balancing eMBB, URLLC, and mMTC with OMA, NOMA, and RSMA

Abstract
The advent of 5th Generation (5G) networks has introduced the strategy of network slicing as a paradigm shift, enabling the provision of services with distinct Quality of Service (QoS) requirements. The 5th Generation New Radio (5G NR) standard complies with the use cases Enhanced Mobile Broadband (eMBB), Ultra-Reliable Low Latency Communications (URLLC), and Massive Machine Type Communications (mMTC), which demand a dynamic adaptation of network slicing to meet the diverse traffic needs. This dynamic adaptation presents both a critical challenge and a significant opportunity to improve 5G network efficiency. This paper proposes a Deep Reinforcement Learning (DRL) agent that performs dynamic resource allocation in 5G wireless network slicing according to traffic requirements of the 5G use cases within two scenarios: eMBB with URLLC and eMBB with mMTC. The DRL agent evaluates the performance of different decoding schemes such as Orthogonal Multiple Access (OMA), Non-Orthogonal Multiple Access (NOMA), and Rate Splitting Multiple Access (RSMA) and applies the best decoding scheme in these scenarios under different network conditions. The DRL agent has been tested to maximize the sum rate in scenario eMBB with URLLC and to maximize the number of successfully decoded devices in scenario eMBB with mMTC, both with different combinations of number of devices, power gains and number of allocated frequencies. The results show that the DRL agent dynamically chooses the best decoding scheme and presents an efficiency in maximizing the sum rate and the decoded devices between 84% and 100% for both scenarios evaluated.

Abstract
Nowadays ransomware attacks have become one of the main problems organizations face. The threat of ransomware attacks, with their capacity to paralyze entire organizations, creates the need to develop a ransomware recovery utility function to help further prepare for the impact of such attacks and enhance the organization's knowledge and perception of risk. This work proposes a ransomware recovery utility function that aims to estimate the impact of a ransomware attack measured in manpower hours till recovery and taking into account different devices and different scenarios.

Abstract
These are the short papers proceedings of the 3rd Symposium of Applied Science for Young Researchers – SASYR. This scientific event welcomed works by junior researchers on any research topic covered by the following three research centers: ADiT-lab (from IPVC, Instituto Politécnico de Viana do Castelo), 2Ai (from IPCA, Instituto Politécnico do Cávado e do Ave) and CeDRI (from IPB, Instituto Politécnico de Bragança). The main objective of SASYR is to provide a friendly and relaxed environment for young researchers to present their work, discuss recent results, and develop new ideas. In this way, this event offered an opportunity for the ADiT-lab, 2Ai, and CeDRI research communities to gather synergies and promote collaborations, thus improving the quality of their research. The SASYR 2023 took place at Instituto Politécnico do Cávado e do Ave, Barcelos, Portugal, on the 11th of July, 2023.

A blockchain architecture with smart contracts for an additive symbiotic network - a case study

Abstract
Adopting innovative technologies such as blockchain and additive manufacturing can help organisations promote the development of additive symbiotic networks, thus pursuing higher sustainable goals and implementing circular economy strategies. These symbiotic networks correspond to industrial symbiosis networks in which wastes and by-products from other industries are incorporated into additive manufacturing processes. The adoption of blockchain technology in such a context is still in a nascent stage. Using the case study method, this research demonstrates the adoption of blockchain technology in an additive symbiotic network of a real-life context. The requirements to use a blockchain network are identified, and an architecture based on smart contracts is proposed as an enabler of the additive symbiotic network under study. The proposed solution uses the Hyperledger Fabric Attribute-Based Access Control as the distributed ledger technology. Even though this solution is still in the proof-of-concept stage, the results show that adopting it would allow the elimination of intermediary entities, keep available tracking records of the resources exchanged, and improve trust among the symbiotic stakeholders (that do not have any trust or cooperation mechanisms established before the symbiotic relationship). This study highlights that the complexity associated with introducing a novel technology and the technology's immaturity compared to other data storage technologies are some of the main challenges related to using blockchain technology in additive symbiotic networks.

MEC vs MCC: análise do desempenho de aplicações interativas e de tempo real

Abstract
A evolução das redes de telecomunicações tem promovido o desenvolvimento de novas aplicações para dispositivos móveis. Algumas destas aplicações exigem requisitos computacionais e energéticos que vão para além das capacidades dos dispositivos móveis. Neste contexto, pode ser utilizada a arquitetura Mobile Cloud Computing (MCC), que permite executar as aplicações em datacenters na cloud e aliviar o processamento nos dispositivos móveis. No entanto, algumas aplicações mais exigentes, e.g. interativas e de tempo real, são mais sensíveis ao atraso no processamento e comunicação da informação. Para estas aplicações, a arquitetura Mobile Edge Computing (MEC) pode ser utilizada como uma tecnologia intermédia que disponibiliza recursos computacionais e de armazenamento a partir da periferia da rede. Este artigo apresenta um estudo que avalia o desempenho das arquiteturas MCC e MEC na execução de duas aplicações tomadas como representativas do espectro das aplicações interativas, de tempo real e de processamento intensivo: o Fluid e o FaceSwap. São apresentados resultados que permitem quantificar o desempenho destas arquiteturas em diferentes circunstâncias.;Telecommunication networks evolution is driving the development of new applications for mobile devices. Some of these applications are resource-intensive and push computational and energy demands of mobile devices beyond the mobile hardware capabilities. In this context, Mobile Cloud Computing (MCC) architecture emerges as a solution for offloading mobile devices that allows to execute these applications in cloud datacenters thus reducing the processing demand in mobile devices. However, more demanding applications, e.g. interactive and real-time applications, are sensitive to processing and communications delay. For these applications, Mobile Edge Computing (MEC) can be used as an intermediary technology, providing computing and storage resources in the network edge. This paper presents a study carried out to evaluate the performance of MEC and MCC architectures when executing two applications, Fluid and FaceSwap, representative of real time and computing intensive applications. A set of scenarios were designed to quantify the performance of these architectures in different settings.

The Status and Management of Web-Related Security at Higher Education Institutions in Poland

Abstract
In an era marked by escalating cyber threats, the need for robust cybersecurity measures is paramount, especially for Higher Education Institutions (HEIs). As custodians of sensitive information, HEIs must ensure secure channels for data transmission to protect their stakeholders. These institutions should increase their cyber resilience, recognizing the heightened risk they face from cybercriminal activities. A breach in an HEI’s cybersecurity can have severe consequences, ranging from data confidentiality breaches to operational disruptions and damage to institutional reputation. This paper conducts a comprehensive evaluation of the cybersecurity mechanisms in HEIs within Poland. The focus is on assessing the adoption of important web security protocols—Hyper Text Transfer Protocol Secure (HTTPS) and Domain Name System Security Extensions (DNSSEC)—and the implementation of security headers on HEI websites. This study aims to provide a snapshot of the current cyber defense maturity in HEIs and to offer actionable insights for enhancing web security practices. The findings indicate a high adoption rate of HTTPS among HEIs, yet reveal significant gaps in web security practices. Also, there is a low adherence to security headers and an absence regarding DNSSEC implementation across the surveyed institutions. These results highlight crucial areas for improvement and underscore the need for HEIs in Poland to strengthen their web security measures, safeguarding their data and enhancing the overall cybersecurity resilience. © 2024 by SCITEPRESS – Science and Technology Publications, Lda.
