Electrical power system security analysis using problem-based learning

Abstract
In a competitive world such as ours, students must be prepared beforehand to be autonomous, industrious and skilful. Problem-based learning (PBL) is a methodology that can help the students to explore and put to use their own resources, and it can be applied to a wide range of students and subject matters. The project incorporates aspects of electrical engineering and computing skills. This study is dedicated to the learning process to help students to deal with the complexity of an electric power network. This study has conducted a new methodology in educational research by adopting technology for teaching and learning. PBL, as an instructional strategy of active learning, was used and adapted for use in Analysis in Electrical Power Systems programme. This methodology addresses many of the concerns of teachers and professional organizations. Above all, it encourages students to be in charge of their education. It emphasizes critical thinking skills, understanding, learning how to learn, and working cooperatively with others. The benefits of PBL in the Electrical Power Systems course are seen in the way students improved the study and analysis of the security in an electrical power system. This method can also be seen as a benefit for Electric Power Systems where educators strive for improved teaching and learning.

Accreditation processes in Electronic and Information Engineering

Abstract
The aim of the SOCRATES EIE-Surveyor project is to be a reference point for Electrical and Information Engineering in Europe. The project brings together representatives from 27 out of 31 eligible countries. One of the tasks of the project is the evaluation of the accreditation processes in the participating countries. A questionnaire about the accreditation process was developed and sent to project partners in each participating country. The main areas investigated the nature of the accreditation body, the criteria, which are evaluated, the structure of the visit and the decision formulation. A first analysis shows that some countries have not yet introduced a formal accreditation process. These countries are generally in a transition situation in relation to introducing the Bologna process. In some other countries several accreditation bodies exist depending on the region or the nature of the institution. It also appears that the accreditation for masters degrees is not yet compulsory everywhere. Other issues regarding the accreditation process that are also being considered relate to who pays the expenses in relation to the accreditation process, what is the relationship between the ECTS and the actual content and level of the courses and whether or not industrial placement is a compulsory component of the programme.

Clustering analysis on questionnaire data for program accreditation

Abstract

The results of the questionnaire, will be analyzed using clustering analysis and more precisely hierarchical, in order to compare the answers in 17 European countries and to find similarities among them. As distance measures the Euclidian metric and the City block distance will be used. Average linkage, and Ward clustering algorithms will be utilized. © 2008 IEEE.

Dynamic Voltage Stability Assessment of an Electric Power Network using Composite Load Models

Abstract
Electric power network stability analysis requires that all system components are represented by their models. Usually, detailed data about system components such as generators, transformers and transmission lines are available. In this case accurate models can be derived from the network devices. However, corresponding data for individual loads are not always available, which makes the modelling of loads an important area of research studies. In this paper it is studied and analysed the effect of the composite load models in the dynamic voltage stability of an electric power network. The composite load models comprise residential, commercial and industrial loads. A severe contingency situation was simulated. The automatic voltage regulators of the generating units, the turbine speed governors, and the under load tap changers models were taken into account. The simulation results were obtained using the EUROSTAG software package. Finally, some conclusions that provide a better understanding of the dynamic voltage stability are pointed out.

Electric Power System's Dynamic Voltage Stability Improvement through a Thyristor Controlled Series Compensation Strategy

Abstract
Sabilizing control for power system stability has been applied to generators equipped with excitation controller and speed governor. Recently, power electronics-based control devices have been the focus of research and development for the improvement of dynamic stability. Power electronics control devices are utilized for control of the power flow on a transmission line or the reactive power in a power system. In this paper it will be presented a thyristor controlled series compensation strategy to improve the dynamic voltage stability of an Electric Power System. In this study it was simulated a significant load demand disturbance in a test power network. The Automatic Voltage Regulator of the generating units, the Under Load Tap Changer and loads were taken into account. The simulation results were obtained using EUROSTAG software package.

Transient stability preventive control of an electric power system using a hybrid method

Abstract
This paper presents a transient stability preventive control technique based on a hybrid method. In order to maintain the power system security it is evaluated the generators output power that should be shift from the most unstable synchronous machines to the undisturbed units. The reallocation of the generators output power is carried out using an optimal power flow program. The hybrid method is a very important tool for the transient stability analysis, since it allows a fast evaluation of the stability limits and margins. This approach can also easily accommodate detailed models of the network devices and protective schemes. In order to validate the established mathematical models it was studied the transient stability of the New England test power network. The results obtained with the proposed methodology were compared with the solutions produced by another numerical formulation, showing a very close agreement.
