Unlocking the potential of digital twins to achieve sustainability in seaports: the state of practice and future outlook

Abstract
This paper examines the role of digital twins (DTs) in promoting sustainability within seaport operations and logistics. DTs have emerged as promising tools for enhancing seaport performance. Despite the recognized potential of DTs in seaports, there is a paucity of research on their practical implementation and impact on seaport sustainability. Through a systematic literature review, this study seeks to elucidate how DTs contribute to the sustainability of seaports and to identify future research and practical applications. We reviewed and categorized 68 conceptual and practical digital applications into ten core areas that effectively support economic, social, and environmental objectives in seaports. Furthermore, this paper proposes five preliminary potential applications for DTs where practical implementations are currently lacking. The primary findings indicate that DTs can enhance seaport sustainability by facilitating real-time monitoring and decision-making, improving safety and security, optimizing resource utilization, enhancing collaboration and communication, and supporting the development of the seaport ecosystem. Additionally, this study addresses the challenges associated with DT implementation, including high costs, conflicting stakeholder priorities, data quality and availability, and model validation. The paper concludes with a discussion of the implications for seaport managers and policymakers. © The Author(s) 2024.

Abstract
Technological evolution is very present in today’s world. The Internet of Everything (IoE) is one of the next steps in this evolution. WordPress is a website-building tool that is used today to its minimum capability. The main problem is how to make WordPress customizable and reliable to support device networking and communication. This can be done by implementing a new architecture that supports WordPress as a powerful tool, allowing for scalability and maintenance. The adoption of a recent trend known as DevOps is an important step in creating and developing a strong website and ensuring its integration with multiple devices. It emphasizes continuous testing, delivery, and integration. This article is based on a literature review to justify using micro-services architecture and the DevOps approach to build a reliable and robust working tool in WordPress that can be part of the IoE. © ICST Institute for Computer Sciences, Social Informatics and Telecommunications Engineering 2025.

Academic Mobility as a Service (AMaaS) Cybersecurity Challenges

Abstract
The current era where living demands an accelerated digital transition mainly focused on encouraging a smarter, healthier, and more sustainable mobility, in all its dimensions – a must concern for the young generations. The convergence through several digital services and APP can be an attitudes and perception changer within the group of academic mobility users’, promoting a more sustainable and better mobility choices that impact on the academic user’s mobility routines. Thus, encouraging a global shift to shared and active mobility services and systems bringing significant contributions to environmental sustainability and, also, to users’ health. The Academic Mobility as a Service (AMaaS) provide a digital service with mobility alternatives to support the academic population geographically located in different faculty campuses and Higher Education Institutions (HEI). The AMaaS applied to a restrict group is helpful to test innovative transport solutions and its high cybersecurity vulnerabilities. Despite the shortage of AMaaS case studies and the lack of security reference, it is imperative that a cybersecurity by design is planned and included in AMaaS design. Boosting Governance-Centric Digital Product Passports Through Traceability in Footwear Industry

Abstract
Since supply chains have become complex and tracking a product’s journey, from raw materials to the end of it’s life has become more difficult. Consumers are demanding greater transparency about the materials origins and environmental impact of the products they buy. These new requirements, togeher with European Commission Green Deal strategy, lead to the concept of digital product passport (DPP). DPP could be seen as an instrument to boost circularity, however the DPP architecture and governance model still undefined and unclear. Data Governance in the context of the DPP acts as the backbone for ensuring accurate and reliable data within these “passports” or data models, leading to flawless traceability. This article approaches the DPPs and it’s governance challenges, explaining how they function as digital repositories for a product’s life cycle information and the concept of Data Governance. By understanding how these two concepts work together, we will explore a short use case within the footwear industry to show how DPP governance architecture might work in a distributed environment. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2025.

Using Explanations to Estimate the Quality of Computer Vision Models

Abstract
Explainable AI (xAI) emerged as one of the ways of addressing the interpretability issues of the so-called black-box models. Most of the xAI artifacts proposed so far were designed, as expected, for human users. In this work, we posit that such artifacts can also be used by computer systems. Specifically, we propose a set of metrics derived from LIME explanations, that can eventually be used to ascertain the quality of each output of an underlying image classification model. We validate these metrics against quantitative human feedback, and identify 4 potentially interesting metrics for this purpose. This research is particularly useful in concept drift scenarios, in which models are deployed into production and there is no new labelled data to continuously evaluate them, becoming impossible to know the current performance of the model. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2025.

Contributions for the Development of Personae: Method for Creating Persona Templates (MCPT)

Abstract
This paper contributes to developing a Method for Creating Persona Templates (MCPT), addressing a significant gap in user-centred design methodologies. Utilising qualitative data collection and analysis techniques, MCPT offers a systematic approach to developing robust and context-oriented persona templates. MCPT was created by applying the Design Science Research (DSR) methodology, and it incorporates multiple iterations for template refinement and validation among project stakeholders; all of the proposed steps of this method were based on theoretical contributions. Furthermore, MCPT was tested and refined within a real-life R&D project focusing on developing a digital platform e-marketplace for short agrifood supply chains in two iteration cycles. MCPT fills a critical void in persona research by providing detailed instructions for each step of template development. By involving the target audience, users, and project stakeholders, MCPT adds rigour to the persona creation process, enhancing the quality and relevance of personae casts. This paper contributes to the body of knowledge by offering an initial proposal of a comprehensive method for creating persona templates within diverse projects and contexts. Further research should explore MCPT’s adaptability to different settings and projects, thus refining its effectiveness and extending its utility in user-centred design practices. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2025.
